Responsible for the safe operation, switching, inspection, isolation, maintenance coordination, and statutory compliance of the electrical installation within the authorized competency and scope.
The BO Chargeman shall act as the competent person responsible for ensuring electrical systems are operated safely, electrical work is properly controlled, and electrical hazards are effectively managed.
Job Requirements
Electrical System Operation
- Take responsibility for safe operation of HT/LV electrical installations within the authorized competency.
- Operate and monitor:HT switchgear,LV switchboards,Transformers,ACBs/MCCBs,MCC panels,Protection relays,Capacitor banks,Electrical distribution systems,Emergency generators,UPS and associated systems
- Monitor electrical loading, voltage, current, power factor, and system abnormalities.
- Maintain electrical operation and switching logs.
Electrical Switching & Isolation
- Perform and supervise electrical switching operations.
- Ensure proper isolation before electrical maintenance.
- Implement and verify LOTO requirements.
- Ensure appropriate electrical barricading and warning signage.
- Verify dead condition before work where applicable.
- Control access to electrical rooms and restricted electrical areas.
- Ensure electrical panels are properly secured after work.
Electrical Safety
- Ensure electrical work is performed using approved safe working procedures.
- Identify electrical hazards and immediately implement appropriate controls.
- Ensure electrical contractors follow site electrical safety requirements.
- Stop unsafe electrical work when necessary.
- Participate in electrical risk assessments, HIRARC/JSA, and permit-to-work activities.
- Ensure electrical maintenance is performed by appropriately competent personnel.
Preventive Maintenance
- Coordinate and supervise electrical preventive maintenance activities.
- Ensure inspections and testing are completed according to approved schedules.
- Monitor the condition of switchgear, transformers, cables, panels, and protection systems.
- Coordinate testing such as insulation resistance, earth resistance, and other applicable electrical tests.
- Identify deterioration and recommend corrective action before equipment failure.
Electrical Fault Response
- Respond immediately to electrical trips, power failures, and abnormal conditions.
- Troubleshoot electrical faults within competency.
- Coordinate emergency electrical isolation when required.
- Support safe restoration of electrical supply following an incident.
- Conduct initial investigation of electrical failures and provide technical reports.
Statutory & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure electrical installation operation complies with applicable Malaysian electrical legislation, regulations, and requirements.
- Maintain required electrical records, logs, and documentation.
- Support statutory inspections, testing, and certification.
- Ensure required competent-person requirements are maintained.
- Coordinate with relevant authorities, service providers, and appointed competent persons when required.
Emergency Response
- Respond to electrical emergencies involvingElectrical shock, Arc flash,Electrical fire,HT/LV equipment failure,Major power interruption andTransformer/switchgear failure
- Coordinate electrical isolation during emergencies.
- Support ERT/EHS during emergency response.
- Ensure electrical areas are made safe before allowing personnel to enter following an electrical incident.
Electrical Contractor Management
- Supervise electrical contractors during maintenance and project activities.
- Verify competency and authorization before electrical work.
- Review electrical method statements and risk assessments.
- Ensure PTW and LOTO requirements are followed.
- Monitor workmanship and electrical safety compliance.

Minimum Requirements
- Valid BO Chargeman competency/license appropriate to the electrical installation and authorized scope.
- Relevant electrical technical qualification.
- Strong experience in industrial HT/LV electrical systems.
- Experience operating and maintaining electrical switchgear and distribution systems.
- Strong knowledge of electrical safety and LOTO.
- Ability to respond to electrical emergencies.
- Good understanding of Malaysian electrical statutory requirements.
- Ability to work shifts/on-call where required.
Preferred Experience
- Min 7- 10years in manufacturing or semiconductor facility experience.
- Experience with HT switchgear and transformers.
- Experience with ACB/MCCB, protection relays, and electrical distribution.
- Experience with generators, UPS, and emergency power systems.
- Experience supervising electrical contractors.
- Strong troubleshooting and fault-finding skills.
- Good documentation and reporting skills.
