Job summary

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Malaysia Berhad in Malaysia is seeking an AVP/VP, Assistant Relationship Manager in Corporate Banking to support client relationships, lead credit proposition preparation, monitor risk, and assist in deal execution within SMBC’s regional network.

The role involves coordinating with RM, ARM, and CM, guiding junior ARMs, maintaining credit controls, and ensuring timely submissions, reviews, and compliance with internal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• Degree or professional qualification in business, accounting, finance, economics or related field.
• At least 15 years of corporate banking experience including credit writing and financial analysis.
• Leadership experience would be an added advantage.
• Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist Relationship Manager in managing client relationships and handle credit-related matters, including preparation of credit propositions, monitoring and reviews.
• Lead and guide a team of assistant relationship managers where applicable.
• Ensure adherence to credit controls and timely communication with Credit Controls and Risk departments.
• Collaborate with RM, ARM and CM to execute deals and maintain ongoing client engagement.
• Prepare and submit accurate credit applications and related reports, including stress testing and compliance documentation.

JOB SUMMARY

• Assist Relationship Manager in managing client relationships and handle all credit related matters including preparation of credit proposition, credit monitoring and reviews, stress testing as well as ad-hoc requests or reviews, self-assessments, audit and compliance matters (e.g. IAD, CRR, External etc). Prioritizing deal execution and taking charge of timely reviews.
• The role may include leading and guiding a team of assistant relationship managers (matrix reporting).
• Adherence to credit controls of SMBC Malaysia and SMBC Labuan and maintain constant communication with Credit Control Department, Credit Risk Department and Regional Credit Departments on credit related matters.
• Closely collaborate with Relationship Managers (“RM”), Assistant Relationship Managers (“ARM”) and Client Managers (“CM”) to ensure key responsibilities are executed seamlessly.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare credit applications, ensure proper, accurate and timely submission of relevant applications in Global Business Reengineering system (“GBR”) including credit proposition, credit monitoring and reviews, stress testing as well as ad-hoc monitoring, requests or reviews and self-assessments, while prioritizing deal execution and taking charge of timely reviews to ensure no overdue.
• Coordinate and attend to audit and compliance matters e.g. IAD, CRR, External and Regulatory etc.
• Early identification and detection of credit and/or industry issues and work closely with Relationship Manager to constructively address credit concerns.
• Support Local Relationship Manager (“LRM”)/ Global Relationship Manager (“GRM”) to manage client relationships and facilitate deal execution (including documentation) within SMBC network for both inbound and outbound business.
• Maintain constant communication with credit department to obtain credit approval in timely manner.
• Actively participating in account planning process, opportunity spotting, preparation of sales pitch and deal execution together with the Relationship Manager.
• As part of credit monitoring, to prepare Control Card, Covenant Control Sheet and Covenant Memo (including periodic compliance purposes).
• Monitor the financial and business performance of customers and report to management/ raise the necessary reports on any adverse/ latest news within stipulated timeline.
• To keep abreast of customers’ financial condition and business/ industry outlook.
• Join RM for customer visit/ site visit on a periodic basis.
• Keep up-to-date and apply the latest internal and regulatory rules and procedures when preparing credit applications.
• Lead and guide fellow ARMs on policies and processes including resource management for the team.
• Cross coverage amongst ARMs during peak or critical period and during block leave.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Degree or professional qualification in business administration, accounting, finance, economics or other related discipline.
• At least 15 years of corporate banking related experience including credit writing, financial analysis, documentation and marketing related skillset. Possession of leadership experience would be of added advantage.
• Analytical skills and able to work efficiently in team work environment.
• Good communication, writing and interpersonal skills.
• Team player, self-motivated, enthusiastic and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
