Job summary

Sun Life Malaysia Assurance Berhad is seeking a seasoned Data Governance & IT Governance lead to establish, implement and monitor governance frameworks, policies and controls aligned with business objectives and regulatory requirements.

You will partner with Data Owners, Stewards and technology teams to improve data value, integrity and risk management, providing practical guidance and escalating material issues while supporting management reporting and decision making.

Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience, including at least 5 years in a lead or governance role.
• Practical experience in data governance, data quality, IT governance, risk, compliance, assurance or audit.
• Working knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry practices relating to enterprise data and information protection.
• Proven ability to coordinate cross functional stakeholders and drive actions to closure.
• Experience coordinating attestations and managing regulatory reporting.

Job description

To lead and strengthen the organisation’s data management and IT governance practices by establishing, implementing and monitoring frameworks, policies, standards and controls that support business objectives, regulatory compliance and effective risk management.

The role serves as the key point of contact for data governance, data quality, data protection and IT governance matters. It works closely with Data Owners, Data Stewards, technology teams, Risk Management, Legal, Audit, Compliance, regional stakeholders and external parties to improve data value and integrity, ensure adherence to requirements, coordinate assurance activities and drive timely closure of gaps and findings.

The position provides practical guidance to business and IT teams, escalates material issues where required, and supports management reporting and decision making through reliable governance information.

Major Accountabilities

Implement Data Governance Framework and Standards

• Maintain the data governance structure, roadmap, policies, standards and operating guidance across the data lifecycle.
• Coordinate with business and technology teams to define ownership, stewardship, accountability and controls for critical data.
• Monitor adherence to internal requirements and relevant regulatory guidance, and recommend improvements where gaps are identified.

Manage Data Quality, Classification and Protection

• Facilitate data quality standards, quality measures, classification, retention and secure destruction requirements.
• Assess data integrity throughout end to end processes, monitor quality indicators and support corrective actions.
• Promote appropriate protection of sensitive data and information assets in line with business and regulatory needs.

Coordinate Data Risk Assessment, Reporting and Awareness

• Perform data management risk and impact assessments, including dark data reviews where applicable.
• Compile and report data management indicators, risk indicators, issues and trends for management oversight.
• Develop communication, awareness and learning materials to strengthen understanding and consistent adoption of data management practices.

Provide Data Advisory, Attestation and Issue Closure

• Act as liaison between business functions and technology teams for data governance, quality and protection matters.
• Coordinate attestations and responses for internal, external and regulatory reviews.
• Track findings, remediation actions and exceptions through to closure, escalating overdue or material matters promptly.

Establish and Operate IT Governance Processes

• Formulate, review and operationalise IT governance processes, procedures and compliance checklists that support business goals.
• Assess IT practices against regulatory, risk, audit and organisational requirements, and ensure appropriate action plans are established.
• Provide guidance to IT teams on applying approved standards, processes and control requirements consistently.

Lead IT Compliance, Assurance and Stakeholder Coordination

• Serve as the primary liaison with Risk Management, Legal, Audit, Compliance, regional teams and external parties on IT governance matters.
• Coordinate periodic reviews, reporting and regulatory submissions to ensure complete, accurate and timely responses.
• Monitor assurance findings and agreed actions, report governance status to management and follow through remediation to closure.

Qualification & Experiences

• Degree in Information Management, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology or an equivalent discipline.
• Relevant professional certification such as COBIT, ITIL, CISA, CISM, CGEIT, CRISC or an equivalent governance, risk or data management qualification is an advantage.
