Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network.

Role Purpose

Serve as a global owner of the Electrical and Controls systems of the FR and Drop Cable process improvements, cost reduction and capital expansion projects. Responsible for managing the electrical and controls scope of assigned projects. The individual will lead/participate in project teams and support global manufacturing operations by providing technical support to manufacturing and control equipment such as HMIs, PLCs, VFDs, and electrical panels designing, installing, integrating, and maintaining all required controls systems.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Design, install, integrate, maintain, and improve control systems for automated manufacturing equipment.
  2. Ensure installation and commissioning meet design and operation standards integration.
  3. Design and improve HMI, PLC, Hardwire, and Panel Layouts.
  4. Create and/or update schematics using AutoCAD Electrical or other CAD software.
  5. Troubleshoot control systems as needed (electrical and pneumatic).
  6. Provide guidance and train less experienced team members when required.
  7. Develop and/or revise internal procedures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our processes.
  8. Monitor KPIs on compliance.
  9. Proactively develop and maintain documentation regarding the function and interaction between all supported systems by the position.
  10. Develop and maintain new programming code at SCADA and PLC levels to support existing infrastructure as well as to integrate additional systems or components into the SCADA environment.
  11. Provide support to the Recipe management system and look for integration opportunities.
  12. Transform existing data stored into valuable information using existing MI tools (such as Power BI, PI Vision, etc.).
  13. Apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices to effectively accomplish technical assignments and projects.
  14. Occasional travel to Corning plants for process development for new products, new operations, and process improvement projects.
  15. Execute project assignments with minimal supervision.

Experiences/Education - Required

Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in the following Engineering disciplines: Mechanical, Electrical or Control Engineering, IT or Software related Bachelors.

Work Experience:

2 – 4 years’ experience in a similar role.

Knowledge and operation of manufacturing equipment.

Required Skills:

  • Effective, high quality oral and written communications skills in English.
  • Strong project management skills. Detail oriented and able to perform with limited supervision.
  • HMI and PLC design, configuration, and programming experience.
  • Proven experience in use and/or administration of IMS systems.
  • Previous experience with automation and control products such as VFDs, PLC/HMIs, RTUs, and SCADA software.
  • Knowledge and experience with serial and Ethernet communications and protocols such as Modbus and Device Net.
  • Ability to program PLCs using ladder logic or other programming languages.

Desired Skills:

  • Understanding of server management and network infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of Optical cable product and process.
  • Ability to engage with shop floor personnel and plant leadership.
