We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role offers an opportunity for an automation-focused senior technologist with a passion for Linux to build a career with Canonical and support those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, which are used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops Engineer, you will drive operations automation in both private and public clouds by utilizing open source infrastructure as code software, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical's automation products. You will also provide feedback to improve our products and open-source technologies, collaborating across teams.

You will be part of a global team of SREs dedicated to delivering top-tier services to our company, customers, and the Ubuntu Community.

Responsibilities

1. Lead automation and Gitops development as an embedded tech lead.
2. Collaborate with the IS architect to align solutions with the architecture vision.
3. Design and develop services as products for internal use.
4. Advance infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation and process improvements.
5. Automate software operations for consistency across clouds, considering distributed system complexities.
6. Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
7. Develop troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance skills; manage observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch.
8. Support and collaborate with global engineering, operations, and support teams.
9. Focus on larger projects and automation during dedicated development time.
10. Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work.
11. Manage time-critical escalations.

Candidate Profile

• Modern hosting architecture driven by infrastructure as code across clouds.
• Product-oriented mindset, aiming to develop products rather than just solutions.
• Experience with Python for large projects.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems.
• Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure via code.
• Practical Linux networking, routing, and firewall skills.
• Experience with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and databases.
• Hands-on Linux server administration experience.
• Deep understanding of cloud computing technologies.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field.
• Effective communication skills in English.
• Strong troubleshooting skills from kernel to web layers.
• Flexible, quick learner, and motivated by dynamic environments.
• Comfortable working in distributed teams.
• Passionate about open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
