We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for delivering core components of Ubuntu—system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration and management. This role is fast-paced, technically challenging, and operates at the heart of Linux server systems.

As an Engineering Manager on the Foundations team, you will be pivotal in driving Ubuntu's development at the intersection of open source and enterprise technology. You will lead, inspire, and develop engineers, influence culture, facilitate technical delivery, and shape strategy and execution.

Location: Globally remote

The role entails
  1. Leading and growing a distributed engineering team
  2. Applying sound engineering principles through active leadership
  3. Planning, estimating, and executing projects
  4. Collaborating with product management on vision and strategy for Ubuntu
  5. Working with cross-functional leadership teams
  6. Advancing and adopting modern software development practices
  7. Promoting excellent engineering and organizational practices
  8. Fostering a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
  9. Ensuring alignment with other teams at Canonical on architecture and roadmaps
  10. Participating in biannual in-person sprints while working remotely
What we are looking for in you
  1. Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm)
  2. Proven experience managing or leading software engineering teams
  3. Strong knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, and toolchains (Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go), and familiarity with ARM and RISC-V architectures
  4. Engagement with open source communities and processes
