Job Description: Engineering Project Leader
Under general guidelines and supervision, the Engineering Project Leader is responsible for proposing, planning, coordinating, and controlling small projects involving technical systems, and participating in larger, more complex projects. They provide technical and non-technical guidance to ensure systems are successful both technically and economically. They assist in developing solutions and resolving complex problems requiring ingenuity and creativity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide project leadership for relocations, modifications, alterations, manufacturing processes, and other projects.
- Establish requirements with customers and develop project plans, including scope, schedule, cost estimates, and acceptance criteria.
- Lead sub-teams working with operating divisions, plants, and management; act as an effective team member on broader teams.
- Demonstrate technical leadership within their discipline and broaden exposure to other engineering disciplines.
- Participate actively in project meetings, documenting key issues, actions, and decisions.
- Manage all phases of project methodology: initiation, planning, implementation, control, and close-out.
- Provide periodic updates to project managers and management.
- Coach other engineers and share expertise to foster continuous improvement.
- Promote safety within their area of responsibility and participate in project critiques to share learnings.
- Recognize and recommend team members for their contributions.
- Take direct responsibility for project results and participate in projects with significant financial or strategic impact.
- Adapt work styles to participate effectively in a global environment, leveraging multicultural experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. Engineering or equivalent technical degree.
- Progressive responsibilities in global technical and project leadership.
- Proficiency in engineering competencies and ability to lead matrixed project teams.
- Self-motivated with minimal supervision.
- Strong team player with influencing skills in a matrix organization.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, familiar with quality tools like Kepner-Tregoe, Performance Excellence, and project management tools.
- Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint; knowledge of MS Project or similar scheduling tools.
- Results-oriented with high commitment levels.
- Effective communication skills across all organizational levels.
- Conflict management skills, seeking win-win solutions.
- Experience in multiple business or technical organizations and prior project/team experience.
- Networking with global technical communities and external suppliers/partners.
- External recognitions such as Green/Yellow/Black Belt, Lean, PMI, or professional engineering memberships.
- Potential for future project management certification.
