The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Manager role is to align the MSL team to the Medical strategy and ensure tactical execution of Strategic Engagement Plan. The MSL manager oversees the effective and efficient performance of individual MSLs and the MSL team tracked according to performance goals set.
Overview
The MSL Manager’s main objectives are to demonstrate value for the business and customers via coaching, developing and leading the MSL team aligned to the four core accountability areas: (1) Scientific Engagement; (2) Insights Generation; (3) Support Data Generation; (4) Internal Collaboration.
Key accountabilities
Team coaching, development and career pathway planning
- Regularly understand areas of strength and areas for development through regular coaching sessions with MSLs around the four core accountability areas.
- Lead and guide individual and team development (clinical, technical and leadership skills) by prioritizing elements of development through customized training plans.
- Consider the needs of the MSLs and the business and support strong management of career pathway plans to understand the need for talent attraction, engagement, retention and development.
- Monitor MSLs’ progress against medical and business priorities. MSL Managers inform medical leadership of progress and course correct the team towards success.
- Ensure all MSLs fulfill global and corporate training requirements towards compliance on applicable internal and external policies and regulations.
Medical strategy, tactical execution & performance measurement
- Participate in development of Country Medical Plans (with TA Medical Manager, Medical Head) and align MSL initiatives and resources to medical strategic priorities.
- Translate overall priorities into specific goals and expected outcomes for target region and individual MSLs.
- Supervise MSL KOL management, territory management and confirm plans are aligned with overall goals and medical strategy. Monitor progress and success of team territory level execution of the plans leveraging all available MSL tools.
- Monitor operational efficiency to ensure balance of internal vs. external facing activities is maintained. Ensure multi-channel engagement strategies are implemented.
- Identify and support opportunities for innovation and field excellence initiatives to differentiate Sanofi medical and provide value to HCP interactions.
- Lead or support Data Generation activities related to Company Sponsored Studies and Investigator Sponsored studies as appropriate.
Lead and communicate scientific and medical insights
- Lead internal collaboration centered around insights generation activities and ensure data, facts and observations are gathered, reviewed and analyzed to be identified as insights and incorporated in strategic decision making.
- Report and facilitate communication (meetings) on key scientific medical and clinical insights to provide value and potential impact for internal cross functional stakeholders.
- Lead insight communication (where necessary escalation) to region and global teams and close the loop back to the MSL team on follow up and impact of insights to the business.
- Ensure MSLs compliantly recognize and share competitive intelligence with relevant internal stakeholders.
Required Education, Experience & Training
- Medical, pharmacy or post graduate level science degree; Clinical background is preferred.
- Prior management experience > 2 years
- Total related industry experience > 5 years, preferably in oncology field.
- Post-bachelor’s degree from accredited university (e.g. Masters, MBA or equivalent).
- Ability to effectively participate in multi-disciplinary teams in order to set and meet business goals and objectives.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in people management skills (e.g., coaching, mentoring, managing difficult conversations) and strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Utilizes appropriate time management strategies to manage a complex environment and motivate and guide the team with multiple skill levels.
- Demonstrates agility to identify critical tasks and resources necessary to achieve objectives and ensure execution of strategies.
