Role Overview:

IMI Norgren is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior CAD Designer & Drafter to join our Engineering team in Querétaro, Mexico. In this role, you will support engineering efforts across the Americas by creating and revising detailed component, assembly, and system drawings that meet both internal standards and customer specific requirements.

Working closely with designers and U.S. based engineers, you’ll gain valuable exposure to global engineering standards, manufacturing practices, and compliance processes. This role is ideal for someone at the start of their design career who is eager to develop CAD proficiency, learn core engineering processes, perform basic calculations and DFMEAs, and contribute to high-quality technical deliverables in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

As a Junior Designer, you will play a key role in ensuring our products meet customer expectations, support continuous improvement initiatives, and maintain the accuracy of engineering data across multiple platforms. This position offers hands-on learning opportunities and a clear path for growth within the IMI engineering team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and revise 2D and 3D models of simple components and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor and/or SolidWorks, following provided specifications and engineering inputs.
  • Generate production ready drawings that meet internal and customer specific requirements, applying GD&T appropriately.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations, including static stress evaluations, thermal expansion analysis, and tolerance stack-ups to support design validation.
  • Identify appropriate materials and recommend preliminary manufacturing methods based on design, performance, and cost requirements.
  • Generate and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and part numbers in collaboration with the engineering team, ensuring zero discrepancies during release.
  • Draft initial Design Verification Plans and Reports (DVP&Rs) and support data collection for compliance and regulatory documentation.
  • Participate in DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) sessions to support risk identification and develop practical understanding of design robustness.
  • Support Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activities by completing assigned tasks and demonstrating a foundational understanding of quality planning tools and processes.
  • Collaborate with designers, engineers, and manufacturing teams to clarify design requirements and incorporate review feedback.
  • Assist in reviewing and releasing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) using PLM systems (e.g., Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage, Agile) and ERP platforms (e.g., JDE, Oracle EBS).
  • Continuously develop CAD skills and contribute to standardization and documentation improvement initiatives.
  • Help maintain and organize engineering documentation, drawing archives, templates, and data structures.
  • Track progress of assigned drafting tasks and ensure timely delivery in alignment with project milestones.
  • Participate in engineering reviews and cross-functional team meetings to align on design direction, priorities, and readiness.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by the Engineering Manager.
Critical Competencies for Success
  • Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Drafting Technology, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. A Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering is a plus.
  • 0–2 years of experience in mechanical design, drafting, or a related field (internships, co-ops, or academic projects acceptable).
  • Working knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD tools, preferably Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
  • Ability to apply design standards, drafting principles, and produce clear, manufacturable drawings.
  • Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, including static stress, thermal expansion, tolerance calculations, and material behavior.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Exposure to material selection and common manufacturing methods such as machining, casting, and injection molding.
  • Familiarity with engineering change processes, DVP&Rs, and document control using PLM and ERP systems (e.g., Fusion 360 Manage, Agile, JDE, Oracle EBS).
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to perform basic calculations that support design validation.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks while maintaining high-quality deliverables in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Comfortable collaborating within cross-functional and global teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and eager to grow in a dynamic engineering environment
