Job description

Remote | Latin America | Electrical Estimating

High-Light Electric, Inc. is looking for a detail-oriented Takeoff Specialist to support our estimating operation by turning construction plans and specifications into accurate, organized, work-coded quantity data.

This is a strong fit for someone who enjoys working through plans carefully, catching what others may miss, documenting questions clearly, and producing takeoffs that estimators can confidently use.

For contractors who consistently demonstrate accuracy, reliability, and strong scope judgment, the engagement is designed with the potential to expand into Takeoff Specialist II, involving more complex takeoffs and greater autonomy.

Before You Apply

This is an Independent Contractor engagement for professionals located in Latin America, not an employment position. Contractors operate independently, provide their own equipment, internet connection, and required software licenses except for Company-provided coded tools/materials, and are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and benefits.

About the Opportunity

High-Light Electric, Inc., part of Mendoza Companies, is seeking a detail-oriented Independent Contractor to provide Digital Takeoff Services supporting our Electrical Estimating team.

This is a fully remote independent contractor engagement for professionals located in Latin America who have experience performing digital quantity takeoffs for construction projects.

The contractor will support the estimating process by converting construction drawings and specifications into organized, coded quantity data used by our estimating team.

This engagement is structured around project-based deliverables rather than employment, offering flexibility while supporting a growing estimating operation.

What You'll Do

As part of each assigned project, you will:

  • Perform complete digital quantity takeoffs using Bluebeam and Company-provided coded tools.
  • Apply the appropriate work/cost codes to all quantified items.
  • Prepare takeoff files in a format that can be imported into the Company's estimating spreadsheets.
  • Identify plan conflicts, specification discrepancies, missing information, and scope questions for estimator review.
  • Prepare concise takeoff summary reports documenting assumptions and observations.
  • Participate in estimating discussions to answer questions regarding completed takeoffs.
  • Continuously study Company standards, plans, specifications, and public works documentation to improve deliverable quality.
  • Contribute recommendations that help improve estimating tools, coding standards, and takeoff methodologies.
What We're Looking For

We're looking for professionals who demonstrate:

  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong analytical thinking
  • Ability to interpret construction plans and specifications
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • Excellent organization and documentation skills
  • Ability to meet agreed project deadlines
  • Proactive communication regarding questions and conflicts
  • Ability to produce complete, accurate, and well-documented deliverables with minimal oversight
How This Engagement Works

Project assignments are reviewed and coordinated during recurring planning meetings.

For each project package:

  • The estimated number of hours is agreed upon before work begins.
  • Deliverables are reviewed upon completion.
  • Approved work is invoiced according to the agreed engagement.
  • Additional work resulting from project addenda is managed separately.

There is no guaranteed minimum volume of work, as each assignment is an individual project engagement.

Independent Contractor Requirements

To be considered for this engagement, contractors must:

  • Operate as an independent contractor.
  • Provide their own computer.
  • Provide their own reliable internet connection.
  • Provide their own software licenses except for Company-provided coded tools and materials.
  • Be responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and benefits.
  • Be able to provide services remotely from Latin America.
Grow Your Scope Through Results

This engagement is designed with room for expanded responsibility as our estimating operation grows.

Takeoff Specialist I

Focuses on producing accurate quantity takeoffs, organizing work/cost codes, and clearly identifying conflicts, missing information, and review items. At this level, completed packages receive full review.

Takeoff Specialist II

Contractors who consistently demonstrate strong accuracy, reliability, scope understanding, and sound judgment may become eligible for more complex prime-bid takeoffs with greater autonomy and spot-check review. At this level, the work requires stronger judgment around electrical, civil, subcontracted, coordination, and potentially missing scope.

Advancement to expanded scope is based on demonstrated results, readiness, and Company needs. It is not based on tenure and is not guaranteed.

Equal Opportunity

High-Light Electric, Inc. is committed to providing equal opportunity and considers qualified applicants without regard to any protected characteristic under applicable law.

Important Information

This opportunity is for an independent contractor engagement and is not an offer of employment. Contractors are engaged on a project-by-project basis, maintain control over the means and methods used to perform the services, and are responsible for providing their own equipment, internet connection, taxes, insurance, and any other business expenses consistent with their independent contractor status.
