We are expanding our in-house legal team, creating an opportunity for an exceptional recent graduate as a junior Legal Advisor or junior Legal Counsel. The successful candidate will be a rigorous and effective practitioner with a track record of academic achievement and social engagement. At Canonical, they will have the opportunity to work on a variety of transactional matters in the technology and enterprise software realm, as well as contracts that underpin global employment, contracting, and partnerships. This position is more focused on ability than extensive experience; applicants with a relevant degree are encouraged to apply.


The successful candidate will work closely with our in-house legal team and colleagues worldwide.


Candidates must demonstrate good commercial judgment, be organized, efficient, and capable of providing high-quality legal and commercial advice. We seek a rigorous work ethic, detailed analysis, conscientiousness, and ambition to identify opportunities for improvement.


Location: This role is home-based in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, or the Americas, with an option to work from our London office.


The role entails:

  1. Reporting to our global general counsel
  2. Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts with customers and vendors worldwide
  3. Providing legal support to internal clients, including Canonical's sales organization
  4. Interfacing with cross-functional teams to support company initiatives
  5. Utilizing Canonical's contract management system for accurate data maintenance
  6. Collaborating with local counsel in various countries for legal advice

What we are looking for in you:

  1. An exceptional academic record from high school and university
  2. A law degree, JD, or equivalent, with active license or current progress towards licensing
  3. Drive and a track record of exceeding expectations
  4. Strong organizational and prioritization skills, capable of working in a fast-paced, multicultural environment
  5. Effective independently and as part of a team
  6. A passion for technology demonstrated through personal initiatives and projects
  7. Professional proficiency in English, with excellent drafting and presentation skills
  8. Confidence to speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas
  9. Appreciation of diversity; polite and effective in a multicultural organization
  10. Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
  11. Thoughtfulness and self-motivation
  12. Result-oriented with personal drive to meet commitments
  13. Ability to travel twice a year for company events, up to two weeks each

  1. Experience in commercial transactions, intellectual property, or corporate law
  2. Leadership qualities and influence skills
  3. Understanding of the open source software community and values
  4. Knowledge of the technology industry—silicon, data centers, PCs, connected devices, and software
  5. Experience working in-house or at a law firm
