Job Description Summary

The Control Systems Lead Engineer is responsible for developing and managing engineering solutions for product control and control system technology needs. This includes applying control theory and mathematical modeling to design systems that exhibit desired behaviors.

The role requires advanced experience in controls engineering, effective communication skills in both English and Spanish, the ability to work independently, and a strong capacity to contribute to the immediate team as well as other teams across the business. Additionally, the candidate must be able to manage projects and lead small teams with specific scopes and deadlines.

Key responsibilities include but not limited to designing and testing aircraft engine control software, translating requirements into actionable engineering tasks, and ensuring the safe and efficient performance of GE Aviation’s commercial engines.

The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving, analytical, and leadership skills. Knowledge of diagnostics for commercial aviation engines is highly desirable.

Job Description
In this role, you will:
  • Design and develop application software for the largest and most powerful commercial aircraft engine ever built.
  • Identify, develop, evaluate, introduce, and manage engineering solutions for product control and control system technology needs.
  • Apply control theory and mathematical modeling to design and control systems with desired behaviors, including operability, boundaries, cycle optimization, control logic, related software, sensors, hardware, algorithms, and feedback to control performance of devices, subsystems and systems.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline and use experience to execute policy/strategy.
  • Participate in technical forums to share information across programs and disciplines with the appropriate audience and detail.
  • Understand key business drivers and how the work of your team integrates with others to contribute to the area.
  • Use judgment to propose different solutions with guidance; solve straightforward tasks using technical skills and analytics; collaborate with multiple internal sources to reach decisions.
  • Be an individual contributor with proven interpersonal skills or an early people leader who can hire and develop talent; provide informal guidance to new team members.
  • Work cross-functionally with other business departments to align activities and deliverables.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced experience in Engineering/Technology & Controls Engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Knowledge of SW development process (requirements definition, proposal, development, testing, validation, certification).
  • Experience with SW development tools (e.g., configuration management such as IBM CCM, SW version management, SW block design such as SCADE, Simulink; requirements management such as DOORs).
  • Strong knowledge of signal processing from transducers, sensors, LVDTs, etc.
  • Solid contribution in a similar role with a controls software design mindset focused on safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • English: ability to maintain technical conversations in English with multidisciplinary audiences.
  • Presentation skills: ability to communicate with Senior Leadership and present on technical boards.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects across functions.
  • Ability to coach others to accomplish tasks.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal and leadership experience with solid business cases.
  • Ability to establish common goals and objectives to meet business results.
  • Ability to influence others and lead small teams to achieve team results and KPIs.
  • Problem solving skills using tools (Gemba, Kaizen, Fishbone, 5 Whys, etc.)
  • Proven analytical and organizational abilities.
  • Proactively identifies and removes obstacles for the team.

Desired Characteristics

  • Knowledge of commercial aviation engine diagnostics, including fault determination, annunciation, and storage, as well as ground testing and engine vibration analysis.
  • Experience identifying root causes and failure modes from a controls perspective, isolating faults, assessing impact on other engine systems, and analyzing engine responses.
