As the publisher of Ubuntu, we serve millions of developers building for the cloud, IoT, and data science. Our goal is to make open source easier and more reliable for innovators and enterprises.

We have created a new Developer Relations team to engage directly with open source communities and developer-centric organizations. We aim to communicate our vision and products for better open source development experiences, and to gather feedback to shape our offerings and priorities.

Position: Developer Relations Engineer

This role requires a technical expert, strategist, and communicator with deep empathy for developers. It combines engineering skills with diplomacy across organizational boundaries. A Developer Relations Engineer is curious, a problem-solver, and loves adapting tools to meet people's needs. Staying current with tech trends and fostering innovation are key aspects of this role.

Location: We are building our initial DevRel team across Europe, Middle East, Africa, and the Americas time zones.

Typical Responsibilities
  1. Participate in team product meetings, contributing insights from strategy to daily development.
  2. Engage with developer communities via IRC, social media, forums, meetups, and more.
  3. Collaborate with other teams to establish common approaches.
  4. Assist in resolving technical issues faced by users or colleagues.
  5. Contribute to technical documentation to meet developer needs.
  6. Create technical articles, presentations, or workshops.
  7. Identify opportunities for improving the developer experience.
  8. Present at conferences, meetups, or technical events.
Candidate Requirements
  • Passionate programmer or developer with open-source experience.
  • Experience developing and deploying software on Linux.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux software packaging (Snaps, debs, charms, etc.).
  • Understanding of current Linux packaging issues and trends.
  • Active contributor to open-source communities and documentation.
  • Engaging speaker and presenter.
  • Effective in diverse, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Willing to travel globally twice a year for company and partner events.
Additional Skills (Optional)
  • Experience in developer advocacy or community roles.
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu and Canonical ecosystem.
