We have created a new Developer Relations team to engage directly with open source communities and developer-centric organizations. Our aim is to communicate our vision and products for better open source development experiences, and to establish a feedback loop to shape our offerings and priorities.

A Developer Relations Engineer is a technical expert, strategist, and communicator with deep empathy for developers. This role combines practical engineering skills with diplomacy across organizational boundaries. Like our audience, a Developer Relations Engineer is never satisfied with the status quo and is driven by curiosity to find better ways to get things done. They are problem-solvers and inventors, understanding people's needs and loving how tools can be adapted to meet them. They stay current with tech trends, provide insights and guidance, and foster innovation.

Location: We are building our initial DevRel team in Europe, Middle East, Africa, and American time zones.

What your day will look like
  • Participate in team product meetings, from strategy to daily development, contributing insight and expertise.
  • Maintain conversations with developer community members across various platforms—IRC, social media, forums, meet-ups, and more.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across teams to establish commonality and consistent approaches.
  • Help solve specific technical problems identified by users or colleagues.
  • Contribute to technical documentation to meet developer needs.
  • Work on technical articles, presentations, or workshops.
  • Identify new opportunities and directions for improving the developer experience.
  • Present at conferences, meetups, or technical events.
What we are looking for in you

A strong candidate:

  • Is a programmer or developer with a passion for and engagement in open-source software.
  • Has experience developing and deploying software using Linux in real-world scenarios.
  • Has practical experience with Linux software packaging (e.g., Snaps, debs, charms, rocks, PIP, containers).
  • Understands current software packaging issues and trends in the Linux ecosystem.
  • Has contributed to open-source communities, software, and documentation.
  • Is an engaging speaker and presenter.
  • Can work effectively, tactfully, empathetically, and confidently with diverse perspectives.
  • Builds trust and relationships.
  • Is willing to travel globally twice a year for company and partner events.
Additional skills you might bring
  • Experience in developer advocacy or community roles.
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu and Canonical's ecosystem of products.
