We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for delivering core Ubuntu components, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration and management. This is a fast-paced, technical role operating at the core of Linux server systems.

As an Engineering Manager on the Foundations team, you will drive Ubuntu's development at the intersection of open source and enterprise technology. You will lead and inspire a team of engineers, fostering a strong engineering culture, influencing technical strategy, and ensuring effective delivery.

Globally remote

The role entails:
  1. Leading and growing a distributed engineering team
  2. Demonstrating sound engineering principles through active leadership
  3. Planning, estimation, and execution of projects
  4. Collaborating with product management to define vision and strategy
  5. Working with cross-functional leadership teams
  6. Advancing and adopting modern software development practices
  7. Promoting excellent engineering and organizational practices
  8. Fostering a collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
  9. Aligning with other teams at Canonical on architecture and roadmaps
  10. Participating in in-person company sprints twice a year
What we are looking for in you:
  1. Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm)
  2. Leadership experience managing or leading software engineering teams
  3. Strong knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, and toolchains like Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go; experience with ARM and RISC-V is a plus
  4. Engagement with open source communities and processes
