As the publisher of Ubuntu, we serve millions of developers building for the cloud, IoT, and data science. We aim to make open source easier and more reliable for innovators and enterprises.

We have created a new Developer Relations team to engage directly with open source communities and developer-centric organizations. Our goal is to communicate our vision and products for better open source development experiences, and to gather feedback to shape our offerings and priorities.

Position: Developer Relations Engineer

This role requires a technical expert, strategist, and communicator with deep empathy for developers. It combines practical engineering skills with diplomacy across organizational boundaries. Like our audience, a Developer Relations Engineer is curious, innovative, and problem-solving, understanding people's needs and loving to adapt tools to meet them. Staying current with tech trends and providing insights and guidance while fostering innovation are key aspects of the role.

Location: We are building our initial DevRel team across Europe, Middle East, Africa, and American time zones.

What Your Day Will Look Like
  • Participate in team product meetings, from strategy to daily development, contributing insight and expertise
  • Maintain conversations with developer community members via IRC, social media, forums, meet-ups, and more
  • Collaborate with colleagues across teams to establish commonality and consistent approaches
  • Help resolve specific technical problems identified by users or colleagues
  • Contribute to technical documentation to meet developer needs
  • Create technical articles, presentations, or workshops
  • Identify new opportunities to improve the developer experience
  • Present at conferences, meetups, or technical events
What We Are Looking For

A strong candidate:

  • Is a programmer or developer passionate about open-source software
  • Has experience developing and deploying software on Linux
  • Has practical experience with Linux software packaging (Snaps, debs, charms, rocks, PIP, containers)
  • Understands current packaging issues and trends in Linux
  • Has contributed to open-source communities, software, and documentation
  • Is an engaging speaker and presenter
  • Can work tactfully, empathetically, and confidently with diverse perspectives
  • Builds trust and relationships
  • Is willing to travel globally twice a year for events
Additional Skills

Preferred:

  • Experience in developer advocacy or community roles
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu and Canonical products
