Role Description

The Controls Engineer contract role is responsible for designing, programming, and commissioning industrial control systems for manufacturing and process environments. Day-to-day tasks include developing PLC, HMI, and SCADA logic, creating control schematics, supporting system integration, and troubleshooting equipment to ensure reliable and safe operation. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional engineering and project teams, preparing documentation, and providing technical support during installation and startup. This is a hybrid role based in Michigan City, IN, where regular on-site work is required, with some flexibility for work from home as project needs allow.

Qualifications

• Strong skills in industrial controls design and implementation, including PLC programming (e.g., Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens), HMI/SCADA configuration, and field device integration.
• Experience with electrical schematics, panel layout, and control system architecture, including familiarity with VFDs, motion control, and industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, etc.).
• Knowledge of automation solutions for automotive, mining, or food and beverage industries, with the ability to adapt designs to specific process and safety requirements.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and optimization of control systems to improve reliability, throughput, and energy efficiency.
• Ability to read technical drawings, create clear documentation, and collaborate effectively with project managers, mechanical engineers, and operations personnel.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Familiarity with relevant safety and industry standards (e.g., NFPA, IEC) and a demonstrated commitment to safe work practices.
• Comfort working in a hybrid environment across North America, with flexibility to be on-site for commissioning, testing, and customer meetings.
