Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary: Plans, conducts, and coordinates a wide range of machining and manufacturing engineering assignments across all Bendix North America locations requiring in-depth knowledge of machining processes, methodologies, and practices. Serves as the corporate technical authority for CNC machining, responsible for driving productivity and improving overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) in all machining operations, supporting make-versus-buy decisions, and leading capital machine projects from specification and sourcing through Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), runoff, and production ramp-up. Provides technical guidance and team support to achieve site and organizational goals. Candidate is a self-starter and can operate independently, influencing near- and long-term machining strategy and capital investment direction.

Essential Functions
  • Drive productivity improvements out of CNC machining centers by improving OEE, cycle time, machine uptime, tool life, and first-pass yield.
  • Lead capital machine projects end-to-end, including technical specification (URS) development, RFQ preparation, vendor evaluation and sourcing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), installation, capability studies, and handover to production.
  • Support make-versus-buy decisions with capacity analysis, cost-per-piece modeling, capital and tooling investment comparisons, and supplier capability assessments.
  • Develop and optimize machining processes including fixturing, workholding, cutting tool selection, speeds and feeds, and CNC/CAM programming strategy.
  • Drive perishable tooling cost reduction through tool standardization, tool life optimization, regrind programs, and vendor-managed tooling inventory.
  • Lead structured problem solving (8D, A3, root cause analysis) for machining-related downtime, quality, and capacity issues.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of equipment and process documentation, including PFMEAs, control plans, process flow diagrams, and standard work instructions for machining operations.
  • Partner with maintenance to implement TPM and preventive/predictive maintenance strategies for machining assets.
  • Manage machine tool builders, integrators, and tooling suppliers; provide technical direction and oversight of vendors on site.
  • Apply GD&T expertise to ensure machines, fixtures, gauging, and machining processes meet drawing and quality verification requirements.
  • Prepare capital appropriation requests with clear ROI justification, distinguishing hard savings from cost avoidance.
  • Drive adoption of machine monitoring, data collection, and Industry 4.0 technologies on machining equipment.
  • Ensure machining equipment complies with applicable safety standards (e.g., ANSI B11 series, NFPA 79, lockout/tagout, machine risk assessment) and applicable Mexican regulatory (NOM) requirements.
  • Support new product launches and product transfers with process routings, labor standards, cycle time estimates, and equipment cost estimates.
  • Identify mentoring needs and train technicians, operators, and less-experienced engineers on machining processes and tools.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with production, quality, maintenance, purchasing, and central Advanced Manufacturing Engineering to ensure alignment and execution.
Knowledge
  • Expert knowledge of CNC machining processes (milling, turning, drilling, grinding, honing) and machine tool technology, including horizontal/vertical machining centers and turning centers.
  • Proficient in GD&T and machining metrology, including CMM and in-process gauging.
  • Knowledge of machine acceptance and qualification methods, including FAT/SAT protocols and machine capability studies.
  • Understanding of make-versus-buy economics, including cost-per-piece modeling and capital versus outsourcing trade-offs.
  • Knowledge of machining cast iron, aluminum, and steel components; knowledge of air brake systems and related technologies preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, OEE, and TPM as applied to machining operations.
  • Familiarity with machine tending automation (robots, gantry loaders, pallet pool systems) and flexible manufacturing systems.
  • Knowledge of machine safety standards (ANSI B11 series, NFPA 79, OSHA, and applicable NOM standards).
Skills
  • Demonstrated expertise working in cross-functional, international teams across U.S. and Mexico operations; bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional problem-solving ability on the shop floor and in collaborative team settings.
  • Advanced analytical skills to interpret machine, process, and cost data and drive technical decisions.
  • Strong organizational and project management expertise to manage capital projects and meet critical deadlines.
  • Effective communicator with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated expertise in creating precise technical requirements, machine specifications, acceptance criteria, and test plans.
  • Exceptional adaptability, capable of managing multiple priorities in fast-changing production environments.
  • Highly self-motivated with demonstrated initiative to independently drive complex projects to successful completion.
  • Demonstrated capability to negotiate with and manage machine tool builders, integrators, and tooling suppliers.
Experience
  • 10+ years of machining engineering experience with a bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and drive continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated expertise within the automotive or commercial vehicle industry is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of leading capital equipment projects from specification through sourcing, FAT/SAT, and production launch is strongly preferred.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, or related engineering discipline required.
  • Master's degree in related engineering discipline preferred.
  • Six Sigma Greenbelt / Black Belt certification is recommended.
  • Project management training a plus; PMI certificate is a plus
  • Active engagement with professional and technical societies (e.g., SME) preferred.
