Job summary

Digitus Group in Kuwait City seeks a Data Center Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical and cooling infrastructure from central plant to data halls, directing maintenance strategy and safety compliance.

Job description

Job Purpose

The Data Center Mechanical Engineer owns the mechanical and cooling infrastructure of the data center at engineering level from the central cooling plant through to the data hall cooling environment. The role is responsible for mechanical maintenance strategy, system reliability, operational procedures, environmental performance, vendor management, safety compliance, spare-parts planning and emergency response. The Mechanical Engineer directs the Mechanical Manning Technicians, authorises equipment changeovers and critical maintenance activities, approves mechanical procedures and acts as the mechanical technical authority during incidents and operational escalations.

Key Responsibilities and Areas of Ownership
  • Take engineering ownership of the data center mechanical and cooling infrastructure including chillers, cooling towers, chilled-water pumps, condenser-water pumps, heat exchangers, CRAH units, CRAC units, AHUs, ventilation systems, fans, filters, coils, valves, actuators, piping systems and associated controls
  • Manage the operation, reliability and performance of chilled-water and precision-cooling systems serving the data halls and supporting areas
  • Own mechanical equipment operating procedures, changeover procedures, start-up and shutdown sequences and equipment rotation plans
  • Authorize lead and supervise critical mechanical activities including chiller changeovers, pump changeovers, cooling-tower changeovers isolation activities, system draining, system filling and restoration of equipment to service
  • Monitor and maintain data hall environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, airflow, differential pressure, cooling capacity and equipment loading
  • Review chilled-water supply and return temperatures, water flow, system pressure differential pressure valve positions and system delta-T to identify performance issues and operational risks
  • Manage cooling redundancy and capacity to ensure sufficient cooling remains available during maintenance equipment failure testing or abnormal operating conditions
  • Own the mechanical safety program including Lockout Tagout Permit to Work risk assessments safe isolation refrigerant safety chemical-handling controls and compliance with HSE requirements
  • Develop and manage the annual mechanical Planned Preventive Maintenance program in accordance with OEM recommendations equipment criticality maintenance history and operational requirements
  • Prepare review approve and maintain mechanical Standard Operating Procedures Methods of Procedure Emergency Operating Procedures maintenance instructions risk assessments and equipment changeover procedures
  • Ensure that all mechanical maintenance activities are planned around available cooling redundancy and executed without compromising data center availability
  • Own vendor coordination for mechanical maintenance activities and supervise OEM major services equipment overhauls repairs inspections and specialist testing
  • Review vendor method statements risk assessments service reports test results recommendations and corrective-action requirements
  • Manage critical spare-parts and inventory planning for chillers pumps cooling towers CRAH and CRAC units valves actuators sensors filters belts bearings motors VFDs and other mechanical systems
  • Analyze cooling-system performance equipment efficiency energy consumption operating trends alarm history temperature profiles water-flow conditions and equipment loading
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve cooling efficiency airflow management chilled-water performance equipment sequencing and overall energy performance without reducing system resilience
  • Investigate mechanical faults high-temperature conditions leaks abnormal vibration low-flow conditions low delta-T equipment trips control failures and recurring alarms
  • Lead root cause analysis for mechanical incidents and equipment failures and implement corrective and preventive actions
  • Direct develop and train Mechanical Manning Technicians in operational procedures inspections first-line maintenance alarm response safe isolation and incident escalation
  • Review technician shift logs inspection checklists operating readings alarm reports and job-card closure records
  • Support testing and commissioning activities integrated systems testing functional performance testing equipment acceptance redundancy verification and operational-readiness activities
  • Support predictive and condition-based maintenance programs including vibration analysis oil analysis refrigerant checks water and coolant sampling thermal inspections leak detection and equipment-performance trending
  • Manage liquid-cooling systems Cooling Distribution Units coolant loops leak-detection systems valves pumps and associated controls where installed
  • Coordinate water-treatment activities water-quality monitoring chemical dosing sampling and corrective actions for chilled-water condenser-water and liquid-cooling systems where applicable
  • Support WTP STP plumbing drainage and mechanical fire-protection systems where included within the data center operational scope
  • Coordinate with electrical BMS IT operations HSE vendors and management teams during planned maintenance incidents testing and emergency situations
  • Maintain accurate mechanical documentation asset records maintenance reports operating procedures equipment histories incident reports testing records and technical drawings
  • Act as the mechanical technical authority during cooling incidents and operational escalations on a 24 7 on call basis
Engineer Level
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical, HVAC, cooling-plant, or critical-facility operations and maintenance experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a data center or another critical facility where loss of cooling could affect essential operations.
  • Demonstrated engineering-level experience with chilled-water systems, precision cooling, or critical HVAC systems.
  • Practical knowledge of chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, CRAH units, CRAC units, AHUs, valves, actuators, VFDs and mechanical controls.
  • Experience in managing cooling redundancy, equipment capacity, environmental conditions, and critical maintenance activities in a live operational environment.
  • Demonstrated ownership of mechanical maintenance planning, technical procedure writing, incident response, vendor management, and spare-parts planning.
  • Experience preparing or approving SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, risk assessments, isolation plans and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, equipment schematics, sequence-of-operation documents, control diagrams and OEM technical manuals.
  • Working knowledge of BMS or BAS platforms, mechanical alarms, equipment trends, sensors, control sequences and environmental monitoring.
  • Good understanding of chilled-water temperatures, flow, pressure, differential pressure, delta-T, heat transfer, airflow, humidity and cooling-capacity principles.
  • Experience with root cause analysis, corrective-action planning and technical incident reporting.
  • Familiarity with testing, commissioning, integrated systems testing and mechanical-system operational-readiness activities.
  • Fluent written and spoken English with strong technical reporting and communication skills.
Other Requirements

The role is fully on-site within an operational data center environment. Availability for 24/7 on-call support is required. The employee must be available to support planned shutdowns, emergency maintenance, testing activities, shift coverage, weekends, nights, and public holidays when operationally required. The employee must comply with all company, client, data center, HSE, Permit to Work, LOTO, security and access-control requirements. The employee must be able to coordinate effectively with technicians, contractors, OEM vendors, operations teams, IT teams and other engineering disciplines.
