Closer to Space, closer to the Future: join Telespazio – Leonardo Space Division!

Leonardo is a leading global industrial group in Aerospace, Defence and Security, delivering advance multi-domain technologies across Helicopters, Aircraft, Aerostructures, Electronics, Cybersecurity, and Space. As part of the Leonardo Space Division, Telespazio a joint venture between Leonardo (67%) and Thales (33%), is a global reference in the field of satellite solutions and services. With a workforce of over 3.500 professionals across its offices in Europe and around the world, Telespazio operates an international network of Space Centres and Teleports, offering cutting‑edge solutions in Geoinformation Services, Satellite Systems and Operations, and Satellite Communications.

Join us as we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in Space.

We are looking for a System Operations Engineer to join our Operations & Logistics Engineering unit, within the Navigation & Exploration domain, for Galileo Second Generation (G2G) program.

You will be embedded at ESA/ESTEC as part of the System Engineering Technical Assistance (SETA) team to aid ESA in its role as System Design Authority. In this role you support the Agency in shaping the operational design of the system, in specifying what Industry has to deliver, and in assessing what is provided is operationally consistent and ready for use.G2G introduces a new satellite generation, a renewed ground segment and enhanced services, to be deployed while the first generation remains in full operation. Achieving this transition while ensuring uninterrupted service operation is one of the program's key engineering challenges.

You will:

  • Support the definition, consolidation and maintenance of the G2G System and Mission Operations Concept (OpsCon), covering nominal, degraded and contingency scenarios across space and ground segments
  • Derive and consolidate operational and operability requirements, ensuring their traceability into system-level and segment-level technical specifications
  • Contribute to the G1G to G2G migration and coexistence strategy: transition scenarios, dual constellation operations, service continuity, and backward compatibility constraints
  • Analyse, characterise and model operational processes and mission timelines
  • Define the operations organisation: roles, responsibilities, and operational interfaces
  • Assess industrial deliverables against operational requirements: review of contractor documentation, RID generation and disposition, and technical support to ESA-led milestone reviews
  • Plan and support operational validation campaigns
  • Support the system through the mission phases up to Operations Readiness Review and operational handover

You will be part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, in an environment where curiosity and initiative matter as much as technical soundness.

We are looking for:
  • Master's Degree in Aerospace, Electronic, Telecommunications Engineering or equivalent, with a strong systems orientation
  • Experience in space systems engineering or space operations
  • Working knowledge of GNSS and of Galileo system architecture
  • Ability to work autonomously and take initiative, combined with intellectual curiosity and a constant drive to question the status quo and bring innovative solutions
  • Good command of English (B2)
  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • Comfortable with software tools and a hands‑on attitude in getting the most out of them

Work location: Fucino Space Centre (L'Aquila, Italy).

From the start of employment, the role involves a secondment to ESA/ESTEC in Noordwijk (The Netherlands), for an estimated period of 1.5 years, extendable in line with project requirements.

What We Offer:
  • Our applicable collective labor agreement is the CCNL for the Private Metalworking Industry and Plant Installation Sector.
  • Working arrangement: Hybrid
  • Employment category: Employee
  • Contract type: Permanent-term
  • Total Base Pay Range:32.000-42.000
  • 13th-month salary payment.
  • performance bonus linked to Business results*.
  • Welfare vouchers worth €250 per year.
  • Meal vouchers worth €8.50, usable at the company cafeteria or for external expenses.
  • Continuous learning and development opportunities to enhance both technical expertise and interpersonal skills.

The Company reserves the right to assess the job grade and compensation package based on objective criteria identified during the recruitment process and in line with the seniority level of the selected candidate and the position itself, in compliance with the principles of fairness, transparency and equal opportunities established by applicable legislation.

How Does the Recruitment Process Work?

Following the collection of applications, we review and identify the candidates whose profiles best match the required qualifications and skills. Selected candidates will participate in an initial interview with the Human Resources team, focused on getting to know the candidate, as well as assessing motivation and personal competencies. This is followed by a more in-depth technical interview conducted together with the relevant Business team. At the end of the selection process, candidates receive feedback regardless of the outcome, whether positive or negative.
