Vivienne Westwood in Milan is seeking a skilled machinist to support the Design team in our Milan Offices. The machinist will make garments from first calico to finished high-quality samples for seasonal collections and fashion shows, with focus on calicos for new developments.

You will read and interpret patterns, sew by hand and machine, and collaborate with pattern cutters and designers. The role requires five years of experience, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work under

Competenze

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a machinist.
  • Ability to read and interpret patterns accurately.
  • Strong garment construction and alteration skills.
  • Versatility in sewing techniques and openness to new ideas.
  • Italian language is essential; good English to relate with the Studio Team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines during Fashion Shows.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Vivienne Westwood is looking for a machinist to support the Design team based in Milan Offices. The machinist contributes to the Milan Studio team, being responsible for the making of garments from first calico to finished, high quality samples for seasonal collections, fashions Shows or occasionally VIP dressing/clients, with a strong focus on calicos for new developments.

KEY REPSONSIBILITIES
  • Sewing calicos, toiles and high-quality samples for the seasonal collections, Shows, possibly VIP dressing, MTOs and special projects.
  • Work confidentiality across all product categories, including Jersey, Tailoring, Evening wear, Corsetry.
  • Demonstrate versatility in advanced sewing techniques and a willingness to experiment with innovative methods and construction ideas.
  • Create precise toiles for new developments, working closely with Pattern Cutters and Designers throughout each stage of development.
  • Read, understand and accurately interpret patterns, ensuring correct construction and proportion.
  • Execute exceptional hand and machine sewing, including beading and embroidery, ensuring consistently high craftsmanship.
  • Recommend appropriate finishing techniques and construction solutions to support design intent and garment quality.
  • Carry out garment alterations with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring fit, balance and finish are refined to the highest standard.
  • Cut samples accurately, handling fabrics with care and understanding shrinkage, grain and fabric behaviour.
  • Taking care of studio equipment (e.g. sewing machine, irons, buttonhole machine, etc.),ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  • Monitor, check and replenish studio stock including fabrics, yarns, zips and other components as needed.
  • Work effectively under pressure and adapt to extended hours during peak periods, such as pre-show deadlines.
  • Support fashion shows as required, including backstage work on last-minute amendments and garment finalisation.
  • Attend fittings when needed, providing technical insight and support during adjustments.
  • Any other ad hoc tasks required.
PROFILE & KEY SKILLS
  • Expert sewing skills for high-quality samples, toiles, and calicos across multiple product categories (jersey, tailoring, corsetry). Minimum 5 years’ experience in the role.
  • Ability to read and interpret patterns accurately
  • Strong garment construction and alteration skills
  • Versatility in sewing techniques and openness to experiment with new ideas
  • Effective collaboration with designers and pattern cutters;
  • Italian language is essential and a good English language kowledge is required to relate with the Studio Team
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality finishing
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, including extended hours during Fashion Shows
  • Knowledge of sewing machine maintenance and studio equipment care
  • Organisational skills for managing fabrics, trims, and studio stock
