Job summary

Steelman Engineering in Chennai is seeking a Fire Door Design & New Product Development Designer to design fire-rated doors, windows, frames, glazing, and hardware. You will create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using AutoCAD and SolidWorks/Creo, and lead new product development from concept through prototype to production-ready design.

• Diploma or B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• Minimum 1 year of relevant experience; more is welcome.
• Experience must be from the Fire Door / Fire-Rated Door / Fire-Rated Window industry.
• Experience in Fire Door Design, Fire-Rated Window Design, Product Development, or manufacturing drawings.
• Hands-on experience in new fire door development, prototype development, testing, and design improvement preferred.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and SolidWorks / Creo for 2D drawings and 3D modeling.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop fire doors, fire-rated windows, frames, glazing, hardware, and related components.
• Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using AutoCAD and SolidWorks/Creo.
• Lead new fire door and fire-rated window product development from concept to production-ready design.
• Develop door leaf construction, frame profiles, insulation, glazing, hinges, locks, seals, and reinforcements.
• Prepare fabrication drawings, BOMs, material specs, and production documentation.
• Coordinate prototype development with production and fabrication teams; implement design improvements.
• Support product testing, trial production, failure analysis, and corrective actions.
• Modify designs per customer/project requirements while maintaining manufacturability.
• Collaborate with shop-floor teams to ensure manufacturability and quality.

Job Description Fire Door Design & New Product Development Designer

Role & Responsibilities

• Fire Door & Fire-Rated Window Design: Design and develop fire-rated doors, fire-rated windows, door frames, glazing systems, hardware arrangements, and related fire-rated components.
• 2D Drafting & 3D Modeling: Create detailed manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, and production drawings for fire doors and fire-rated windows using AutoCAD and SolidWorks / Creo.
• New Product Development: Work on new fire door and fire-rated window product development, including concept development, prototype preparation, design modifications, product improvement, and production-ready design.
• Fire Door Construction & Detailing: Develop designs considering door leaf construction, frame profiles, insulation, fire-rated glazing, hinges, locks, panic hardware, seals, reinforcements, clearances, and other fire-door-specific requirements.
• Manufacturing & Fabrication Drawings: Prepare accurate fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, cutting details, BOMs, material specifications, and production documentation for manufacturing.
• Prototype Development: Coordinate with production and fabrication teams during prototype development, identify design/manufacturing issues, and implement practical design improvements.
• Testing & Product Improvement: Support fire door product testing, trial production, failure analysis, corrective actions, and continuous product improvement.
• Customization & Engineering Changes: Modify existing fire door and window designs according to customer/project requirements while maintaining required product performance and manufacturing feasibility.
• Shop-Floor Coordination: Work closely with production, fabrication, quality, and testing teams to ensure that developed products can be manufactured accurately and consistently.

Preferred Candidate Profile

• Qualification: Diploma or B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience. Candidates with more experience are welcome.
• Mandatory Industry Experience: Candidate's professional experience must be specifically from the Fire Door / Fire-Rated Door / Fire-Rated Window industry.
• Mandatory Design Experience: Experience should include Fire Door Design, Fire-Rated Window Design, Product Development, Manufacturing Drawings, or related fire-door product engineering activities.
• New Product Development: Candidates with hands-on experience in new fire door product development, prototype development, product modification, testing, and design improvement will be strongly preferred.
• Software Knowledge: Hands-on proficiency in AutoCAD and SolidWorks / Creo for 2D manufacturing drawings and 3D product modeling.
• Technical Knowledge: Good understanding of fire door construction, door frames, insulation, fire-rated glazing, hardware, seals, hinges, locks, reinforcements, sheet-metal fabrication, welding, assembly, and manufacturing processes.
• Strict Industry Requirement: Candidates with experience only in general mechanical design, machine design, structural design, automotive design, sheet-metal products, cable trays, or other non-fire-door industries will NOT be considered.
• Experience Gap: Freshers and candidates with less than 1 year of relevant fire-door industry experience will not be considered.
• Location Preference: Candidates residing in/around Ambattur, Avadi, Korattur, Mogappair, Villivakkam, or candidates willing to relocate to Ambattur.
