Closing Date: September 2, 2026

Note: Posting comes off at 12:00 AM on Closing Date, with competition closing at 11:59 pm day prior.

At the City of Leduc, our mission is People. Building. Community. We offer a collaborative and dynamic workplace where our values of Teamwork, Service, Respect, and Leadership guide our conduct and contribute to a healthy culture. If you would like to work as part of a progressive organization and enjoy a fast-paced environment, then this may be the opportunity for you.

Permanent, full-time (40 hours/week)

$80,184.00 - $100,235.20 per annum

Clean water and reliable utility systems are the foundation of our entire community. When our residents turn on their taps or rely on drainage during a heavy storm, our Utility Services team makes sure everything works behind the scenes without a hitch.

We are looking for a permanent, full-time Utility Services Operator II to join our crew. This is a hands‑on, critical field role for a certified operator who knows the trade, takes pride in keeping vital infrastructure running smoothly, and wants long‑term stability with a solid team. If you enjoy solving practical problems in the field and working with people who take pride in what they do, we want you on our team.

What is the Opportunity?

Reporting to the Lead of Utility Services, the Utility Services Operator II handles the day‑to‑day operations and preventative maintenance across our water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater networks.

In this role, you will be out in the field doing real, technical work—from servicing pumps and valves to conducting water testing and troubleshooting system mains. You’ll also step up periodically to mentor junior operators, coordinate seasonal staff, and help lead daily site work when the Lead is away. It is a high‑trust position where your skills directly protect public health and the environment every day.

What will you do?

In this active, field‑focused role, you will keep the City’s water and wastewater systems running safely and reliably. You will:

  • Operate and maintain the water distribution network, including inspecting water valves, testing and servicing fire hydrants, installing water meters, and maintaining storage reservoirs and pumping facilities.
  • Maintain the wastewater and storm collection systems, troubleshooting mains and laterals, performing sewer inspections, and servicing lift stations.
  • Conduct regular water quality sampling and testing, ensuring all systems strictly comply with provincial environmental standards.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex utility equipment, including vertical turbine pumps, split‑case pumps, and pressure‑reducing/flow‑control valves.
  • Provide guidance and on‑the‑job training to fellow operators and seasonal crew members to maintain high safety and workmanship standards.
  • Step into temporary crew leadership, helping coordinate daily work, safety documentation, and contractor activities when required.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations and routine facility checks, responding quickly to emergency utility calls to support community safety and first responders.
Who you are?

You Are a Reliable, Safety‑minded Operator Who Works Well On a Crew, Communicates Clearly, And Takes Pride In a Job Done Right. You Bring

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Alberta Environment Level II certification in both Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of hands‑on experience in municipal water and wastewater operations.
  • Practical mechanical skills and comfort troubleshooting pumps, valves, hydrants, and lift station components.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards, including Confined Space Entry, WHMIS, First Aid, and safe trenching/excavation practices.
  • Comfort using computer systems such as SCADA, GIS mapping tools, and basic Microsoft Office applications.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record (Class 3 with air brake endorsement is an asset).

Holding a relevant diploma or certificate in water/wastewater technology from a recognized institution will be considered an asset.

What we Offer?
Benefits

Joining our Utility Services team means choosing steady, year‑round work with a supportive crew and solid benefits. In this role, we offer:

  • Comprehensive Health and Dental Benefits from day one for you and your family.
  • Participation in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP), providing reliable, long‑term retirement security.
  • Predictable full‑time hours with paid overtime and on‑call premiums.
  • Direct support for ongoing training, trade certifications, and operator development.
  • Free parking and a free annual pass to City of Leduc recreation facilities to support your health and well‑being.
Important Notes!
  • The successful candidate must provide a current Criminal Record Check and a clean Driver's Abstract at their own expense.
  • As per the drug & alcohol standard, this position has been deemed safety sensitive by the employer and as such is subject to reasonable cause and post‑incident drug and alcohol testing.
