Job Description

The ICU Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to critically ill patients requiring continuous monitoring and advanced clinical support. The involves close observation of vital parameters, medication and infusion management, ventilator and life-support monitoring, emergency response, infection prevention, clinical documentation, and coordination with intensivists, consultants, and multidisciplinary critical-care teams.

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU.
  • Perform detailed initial and ongoing assessment of ICU patients.
  • Monitor vital signs, ECG, SpO₂, blood pressure, temperature, and other parameters.
  • Closely observe patients for signs of deterioration or complications.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, antibiotics, and prescribed therapies.
  • Manage and monitor IV lines, central lines, drains, and catheters as applicable.
  • Monitor infusion pumps and titrate medications according to authorized orders.
  • Assist with mechanical ventilation and respiratory support as directed.
  • Monitor ventilator settings and report abnormal parameters to the clinical team.
  • Provide oxygen therapy and airway-care support.
  • Assist with endotracheal intubation and other emergency procedures.
  • Perform suctioning and maintain airway patency as required.
  • Assist during CPR, code-blue events, and resuscitation procedures.
  • Collect and send blood, urine, and other specimens for investigations.
  • Monitor laboratory and diagnostic reports and communicate critical findings.
  • Assist physicians during invasive and bedside procedures.
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique and ICU infection-control practices.
  • Follow central-line, catheter, ventilator, and other infection-prevention bundles.
  • Maintain accurate ICU charts, nursing notes, medication records, and observation sheets.
  • Communicate patient condition and treatment updates to authorized family members.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and their attendants.
  • Ensure ICU equipment, emergency drugs, and supplies are available and functional.
  • Coordinate with intensivists, physicians, respiratory therapists, laboratory, radiology, and other departments.
  • Follow hospital SOPs, critical-care protocols, patient-safety standards, and ethical guidelines.
