Job description

Senior Solutions Engineer
(Vessel Installation, Commissioning & Digital Automation)

Smart Ship Hub is looking for a highly experienced Senior Solutions Engineer for field installation, and commissioning of our onboard maritime IoT, automation, and performance monitoring systems across a global fleet. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who thrives on solving hard engineering problems driving data telemetry from ship machinery, designing automation architecture, and mentoring a team through complex field deployments.

Join Smart Ship Hub and become part of a growing community of digitalization specialists working on problems that propel real change in global maritime logistics. We offer a highly collaborative environment, autonomy to design and deliver solutions for globally leading companies, and the opportunity to keep reskilling as we scale up our innovation.

Job Description:
  • Drive solutions design and architecture for global automation and digital transformation requirements, including identification of sensors, interaction with machinery makers, and study of electrical drawings and manuals.
  • Lead the solutions design process with the team, with primary focus on fetching reliable data signals/telemetry from different vessel machinery.
  • Own end-to-end planning, execution, and quality assurance of field installation and commissioning activities onboard vessels worldwide, including supervision of retrofit installations.
  • Carry out field inspection visits as required and guide vessels/onboard teams to effective troubleshooting and case resolution.
  • Work in close coordination with technology specialists, data scientists, and Chief Engineers experienced in vessel and voyage performance management.
  • Own the technical relationship with ship owners, ship management companies, and onboard crew during installation and commissioning, ensuring smooth deployment and handover.
  • Develop and maintain installation and commissioning procedures, checklists, and standard operating documentation.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Product, Hardware, and Data teams to ensure solutions are installation-ready, and that field feedback is incorporated into product design.
  • Provide technical training and knowledge transfer to onboard crew, port engineers, and third-party installation vendors/partners.
  • Manage and mentor a team of solutions/installation engineers, ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and timeline standards.
  • Oversee vendor and third-party installation partner performance, including scheduling, quality audits, and issue escalation.
  • Support pre-sales and proposal teams with technical scoping, feasibility assessments, and installation cost/time estimates for new client onboarding.
  • Track and report installation/commissioning KPIs (turnaround time, first-time-right rate, issue backlog) to leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations, classification society requirements, and company HSE standards during all onboard activities.
Desired Technical Skillset:
  • Strong, proven experience in industrial automation with deep competence in field installation and commissioning.
  • Hands-on experience working with PLCs, RTUs, Gateways, and Edge Devices/Data Loggers.
  • Experience with data telemetry from various ship machinery such as Main Engine, DG Sets, Boiler, Flow Meters, and Emissions monitoring systems.
  • Experience working with protocols such as Modbus (RTU/TCP), Profibus/Profinet, and data signals including RS485, NMEA, 420 mA, 010 V.
  • Experience with various control systems data telemetry, gateway configuration, and PLCs from Siemens, Schneider, Allen-Bradley, Panasonic, or similar is desirable.
  • Maritime experience is mandatory.
  • Experience with AI-based camera systems — integration, installation, and commissioning (e.g., CCTV/vision-based monitoring, draft/mooring/berthing cameras, or similar AI-vision use cases) is a strong plus.
Other Skills:
  • Industrial automation and electrical systems.
  • Communication systems and machinery.
  • Systems operation and maintenance.
  • In-depth knowledge of maintenance and commissioning, with the ability to carry out in-depth troubleshooting and guide vessels to effective case resolution.
We are looking for:
  • Minimum 15 years of total work experience in marine engineering, industrial/shipboard automation, or a related technical field, with at least 8-10 years of hands-on experience in the desired automation skillset above.
  • Demonstrated experience leading installation/commissioning teams and multi-stakeholder projects across ships, ports, and remote locations.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills for hardware, connectivity, and integration issues in live onboard environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively, including to vessels in port and, where required, onboard.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience working across multicultural teams, ship owners, and crew.
  • Working knowledge of classification society requirements, maritime safety regulations, and HSE standards for onboard work.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, result-oriented environment; open to reskilling and adopting new tech platforms as required.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with the ability to make sound technical decisions under field constraints.
  • Candidates with hands-on exposure to AI-based camera integration and installation (vision systems, edge AI cameras, or similar) will be considered a strong match.
Academic Qualification
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering — Electrical / Instrumentation / Automation Engineering, or a related discipline. Marine engineering certifications (e.g., Class 1/2 Engineer, ETO) are a strong plus.

This opportunity is ideal for senior automation engineering professionals seeking a shore-based role for global vessel installation, commissioning, and digital automation.
