HellaGoodAudio is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own the technical delivery of Unity projects, writing production code and guiding the team. This hands-on role emphasizes building core systems, performance, and security, with AI tools integrated into daily work.
You will review requirements, design scalable game systems, mentor engineers, and work with clients on technical solutions. Proficiency in C#, Unity, URP, and testing is essential.
Review the GDD and requirements, assess technical feasibility, and identify gaps early.
Estimate development effort accurately and deliver within the agreed estimates.
Design and build core game systems that are scalable, performant, and maintainable.
Evaluate and recommend tools, plugins, and SDKs for new projects.
Contribute to sprint and milestone planning.
Lead the project's engineering team by assigning tasks, tracking progress, and balancing workload.
Use AI coding agents and assistants across the development cycle: prototyping, implementation, refactoring, testing, debugging, and documentation.
Take full ownership of the quality, correctness, and security of every line of code you deliver, whether written by hand or with AI tools.
Review and validate all AI-generated code before it is merged.
Write unit tests for the code you deliver and automated tests for core gameplay systems.
Conduct code reviews and enforce coding standards, branching strategy, and version control practices.
Profile and optimise memory usage, frame rate, load times, and build size across target platforms.
Build modular, reusable components that can be used across projects.
Mentor engineers on the project in engineering practices and the effective use of AI tools.
Work directly with clients on technical requirements, implementation approach, and solutions to issues.
In-depth knowledge of Unity, including the component lifecycle, ScriptableObjects, physics, animation, UI (uGUI / UI Toolkit), and Addressables or Asset Bundles.
Hands‑on experience with Unity 6 or a recent LTS release, and URP.
At least 2 shipped titles on mobile, PC, or console, with ownership of major systems.
Hands‑on experience with the Unity Profiler and Frame Debugger, and with optimising draw calls, batching, GC allocations, and memory, including on low‑end Android devices.
Solid understanding of asynchronous programming in Unity (coroutines, async/await, UniTask or similar).
Good knowledge of automated testing, particularly developer unit testing, and of writing testable code.
Experience integrating third‑party SDKs such as ads, analytics, IAP, and Firebase.
Proficient, daily use of AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, with a demonstrable improvement in delivery speed and quality.
Ability to critically review, debug, and explain AI-generated code, with sound judgement on when to rely on it and when not to.
Efficient use of the wider development toolchain, including IDEs (Rider or Visual Studio), debuggers, profilers, Git, Jira, and build tools.
Experience estimating tasks and breaking features down into deliverable work.
Clear written and verbal communication skills in English.
Good to Have Experience with Unreal Engine.
Experience with multiplayer frameworks such as Photon, Netcode for GameObjects, or Mirror.
Experience writing shaders in URP or HDRP using Shader Graph or HLSL.
Experience building custom editor tools and automating builds.
Experience working within a client's existing codebase on co‑development projects.
BE / BTech in Computer Science, Games Technology, or a related field.
