Job Summary
The Senior Pharmacist is responsible for overseeing pharmacy operations, ensuring safe and effective medication management, supervising pharmacy staff, maintaining regulatory compliance, and providing expert pharmaceutical care to patients. The role requires strong clinical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate with healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Pharmacy Operations
- Supervise daily pharmacy activities and ensure efficient workflow.
- Monitor inventory levels and ensure timely procurement of medicines and medical supplies.
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and dispensing of medications.
- Verify prescriptions for accuracy, legality, and appropriateness.
- Manage controlled substances according to applicable regulations.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Review medication orders and identify potential drug interactions, allergies, and contraindications.
- Provide medication counseling and health education to patients.
- Support healthcare providers with drug information and therapeutic recommendations.
- Monitor adverse drug reactions and medication safety events.
- Participate in medication therapy management and clinical audits.
Team Leadership
- Supervise, train, and mentor pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff.
- Conduct performance evaluations and identify training needs.
- Develop staff schedules and ensure adequate workforce coverage.
- Promote a culture of patient safety and continuous improvement.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with pharmacy laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
- Develop and implement pharmacy policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Participate in internal and external audits.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation.
Customer Service
- Address patient concerns related to medications and pharmacy services.
- Ensure high standards of customer satisfaction and professional conduct.
- Support health awareness and patient education initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) in Pharmacy.
- Valid Pharmacist License/Registration as per regulatory requirements.
- Additional certifications in clinical pharmacy or hospital pharmacy are preferred.
Experience
- 5-8+ years of pharmacy experience.
- Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role preferred.
- Experience in hospital, retail, or specialty pharmacy settings.
