Role Purpose
The Software Asset Management (SAM) Specialist is responsible for managing and optimizing the organization’s software assets throughout their lifecycle. This role ensures compliance with licensing agreements, reduces software‑related risks, controls costs, and maximizes the value of software investments. The SAM Specialist works closely with IT, procurement, legal, and finance teams to maintain accurate software inventories and enforce governance policies.
Key Accountabilities
- Maintain a centralized inventory of all software assets, licenses, and entitlements.
- Track software usage, installations, and renewals across the organization.
- Ensure compliance with vendor licensing agreements and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure Proof of Entitlement, MPLS is captured and compliance is always met.
- Conduct regular internal audits and support external software license audits.
- Identify opportunities for cost optimization, license re‑harvesting, and vendor consolidation.
- Collaborate with procurement and finance teams on software purchasing, renewals, and budgeting.
- Implement and manage SAM tools and systems for automated tracking and reporting.
- Develop and enforce SAM policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Provide reporting and insights on software usage, compliance status, and cost trends.
- Act as a liaison between IT, vendors, and business stakeholders for software‑related matters.
- Manage vendor relationships and contract negotiations related to software licensing.
Experience & Skillsets Required
- 5–7 years of experience in Software Asset Management (SAM), IT Asset Management (ITAM), or similar roles.
- Practical experience working with SAM tools such as Flexera, Ivanti, Snow Software, Lansweeper, Licenseware, or equivalent platforms.
- Demonstrated experience managing licenses from major vendors including Microsoft, Oracle, Adobe, and IBM.
- Proven ability to manage software audits and ensure ongoing license compliance.
- Solid understanding of ITIL practices and the end‑to‑end IT asset lifecycle.
- Experience collaborating with cross‑functional stakeholders across IT, procurement, finance, and legal teams.
- Hands‑on experience delivering end‑to‑end SAM implementations, with a focus on driving automation and process efficiency.
