Safety Officer

Responsibilities

1. Compliance & Legal: Ensure adherence to the Factories Act, 1948, and state‑specific safety regulations.
2. Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA): Conduct regular plant inspections to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
3. Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, near‑misses, and occupational diseases to prevent recurrence.
4. Safety Training & Awareness: Organize safety drills, workshops, and induction training for employees to create a proactive safety culture.
5. PPE Management: Advise on, select, and ensure the availability and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment.
6. Safety Committee: Act as an advisor and catalyst to the site safety committee.
7. Record Keeping: Maintain statutory records related to accidents, dangerous occurrences, and health check‑ups.
8. Emergency Preparedness: Develop and maintain emergency response plans and firefighting systems.

Key Legal Duties (Factories Act)

1. Safety Audit: Advise on safety aspects of all job studies and plant improvements. The safety officer shall also conduct safety studies for selected jobs, analysing responsibilities and roles for each position to ensure safety.
2. Monitoring Health: Monitor the working environment to prevent occupational health hazards such as noise, dust, and heat. The safety officer is responsible for ensuring that protective equipment is of optimum quality and for advising the purchasing department on safety standards.
3. Advice and assist factory management: Assist management in fulfilling obligations to maintain a safe environment for workers.
4. Providing Guidance regarding safety measures to departments of the factory: Curate department‑specific safety measures and guide departments accordingly to protect workers’ health.
5. Ensuring the use of only quality equipment: Ensure that protective equipment used is of optimum quality and advise on maintenance standards.
6. Evaluating the effectiveness of the factory’s action plan: Assess the execution of the safety action plan and recommend improvements if needed.
7. Advise on plant safety: Provide expert advice on plant safety matters to avoid mismanagement of equipment and machinery.
8. Advising on reporting an investigation of industrial diseases and accidents: Provide guidance on reporting and investigating industrial diseases and fatal accidents.
9. Inspecting the plant: Inspect the plant to ensure safe working conditions and practices are followed by workers.

Qualifications and Skills

1. Education: Degree or Diploma in Engineering or Science, plus a specialized Diploma in Industrial Safety from a recognized institute.
2. Experience: 6‑8 years of experience in safety management within a manufacturing environment.
3. Knowledge: Strong understanding of Indian labor laws, environmental regulations, and OHSAS/ISO standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
4. Skills: Strong analytical, investigation, and communication skills.
