OPAL-RT Technologies is seeking an R&D Engineer specializing in power electronics simulation. The role focuses on advancing real-time simulation capabilities for power electronics, supporting global customers and multi-disciplinary teams.

Based in Edinburgh or surrounding areas with potential for partial remote work for strong candidates, you will lead engineering projects, mentor peers, and contribute to pre-release validation and technical papers, shaping the future of real-time simulation

Competenze

• PhD in electrical engineering, or master's with 5+ years research in power electronics.
• 5+ years hands-on real-time simulation of power electronics.
• Strong knowledge of power electronics, modeling and numerical methods.
• Experience with real-time simulation tools: OPAL-RT eHS, PLECS, SPS, HYPERSIM, RT-LAB, PSCAD.
• Proficient in MATLAB and Simulink.

Main Responsibilities

• Propose and execute power electronic engineering and R&D projects.
• Support technical, business development and sales teams with specialized expertise on power electronics real-time simulation.
• Mentor technical team to raise skill levels in power electronics simulation.
• Provide feedback on and support pre-release testing and validation of OPAL-RT’s power electronics.
• Write and present technical papers on power electronics simulation.

Requirements

• Education : Ph. D. degree in electrical engineering (or relevant field), master’s degree holders with 5+ years of academic/industrial research experience in power electronics would be considered.
• Experience : At least 5 years of hands-on real-time simulation of power electronics or simulation
• Required knowledge : Strong understanding of power electronic, including applications, modeling and numerical methods. Strong experience with power electronics simulation tools such as OPAL-RT’s eHS, PLECS and SPS or OPAL-RT’s HYPERSIM, RT-LAB and PSCAD. Strong experience with MATLAB, Simulink and relevant toolboxes for power electronics.
• Language skills : Strong oral and written communication skills in English. French and/or German are a plus.
• Required skills: Ability to inspire confidence and gain buy-in through expertise and clear technical reasoning. Strong problem solving, design, analytical skills and out-of-the-box thinking, coming up with creative solutions on testing approaches in critical timelines. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Proficient at writing process documentation. Highly autonomous and proactive in identifying improvements

Assets::

• Hardware and interfacing experience for hardware-in-the-loop testing of power electronic controllers.
