Job summary

OPAL-RT Technologies seeks an R&D Engineer with a strong focus on power systems simulation. Place of work: Edinburgh or surroundings, partly remote position could be considered for strong candidates.

You will lead power-systems R&D projects, support sales with specialized expertise on real-time simulation, and mentor the technical team to raise skills. You will also contribute to testing, validation, and technical papers for publication.

Qualifications

• PhD in electrical engineering or Master’s with 5+ years of research in power-systems simulation.
• 5+ years hands-on real-time power-systems simulation experience.
• Strong MATLAB/Simulink skills and toolboxes for power systems simulation.

Main Responsibilities

• Propose and execute power systems engineering and R&D projects.
• Support technical, business development and sales teams with specialized expertise on power system real-time simulation.
• Mentor technical team to raise skill levels in power system real-time simulation.
• Provide feedback on and support pre-release testing and validation of OPAL-RT’s power systems simulation tools.

Requirements

• Education : Ph. D. degree in electrical engineering (or relevant field), master’s degree holders with 5+ years of academic/industrial research experience in power systems simulation.
• Experience : At least 5 years of hands-on real-time simulation of power systems simulation
• Required knowledge : Strong understanding of power system simulation, including applications, modeling and numerical methods. Strong experience with power systems simulation tools such as OPAL-RT’s eHS, PLECS and SPS or OPAL-RT’s HYPERSIM, RT-LAB and PSCAD. Strong experience with MATLAB, Simulink and relevant toolboxes for power systems simulation. Understanding of concepts of FPGA implementation of numerical methods and algorithms for power system simulation.
• Language skills : Strong oral and written communication skills in English. French and/or German are a plus.
• Required skills Ability to inspire confidence and gain buy-in through expertise and clear technical reasoning. Strong problem solving, design, analytical skills and out-of-the-box thinking, coming up with creative solutions on testing approaches in critical timelines. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Proficient at writing process documentation. Highly autonomous and proactive in identifying improvements
