Job Description Purchase Engineer / Purchase Executive

Industry: Oil & Gas Equipment Manufacturing
Experience: 7 years
Qualification: B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgical / Mechanical Engineering (preferred Metallurgy background)

Role Objective

To manage procurement activities with a strong focus on metallurgical components, raw materials, and critical items used in oil & gas equipment manufacturing. Responsible for ensuring cost-effective, timely, and quality procurement while maintaining vendor development, compliance, and coordination with production, design, and quality teams.

Key Responsibilities
1. Procurement & Sourcing
  • Identify, source, and procure raw materials, forgings, castings, plates, bars, and other metallurgical components as per project requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with technical specifications, metallurgical standards, and international codes (ASTM, ASME, API, etc.).
  • Negotiate prices, terms, and delivery schedules to achieve cost optimization and timely supply.
  • Evaluate indents from production/design teams and ensure procurement aligns with project timelines.
2. Vendor Management
  • Develop, qualify, and manage vendors for metallurgical items and fabricated components.
  • Conduct vendor audits for capability, quality, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Monitor vendor performance (delivery, cost, quality) and maintain a vendor evaluation system.
  • Resolve issues related to defective/rejected materials in coordination with QC.
3. Cost & Inventory Control
  • Achieve annual cost-reduction targets by strategic sourcing and vendor negotiations.
  • Maintain optimum inventory levels and ensure uninterrupted supply chain.
  • Track market trends, material cost fluctuations, and suggest procurement strategies.
4. Technical Coordination
  • Work closely with Design/Engineering to map specifications with vendor capabilities.
  • Support in selection of critical items such as pressure-containing parts, tubulars, and exotic alloys.
  • Coordinate with QA/QC for inspection, testing, and documentation of metallurgical items.
  • Ensure proper documentation for MTC (Material Test Certificates), heat numbers, traceability, and compliance.
5. Compliance & Documentation
  • Ensure procurement process follows ISO/API requirements and company SOPs.
  • Maintain purchase orders, GRNs, vendor records, and inspection reports systematically.
  • Support in external and internal audits related to procurement.
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of metallurgy, welding processes, heat treatment, and NDT.
  • Good understanding of procurement processes in Oil & Gas equipment manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience in vendor negotiations, development, and management.
  • Familiar with ERP systems and MS Excel/Word for purchase data management.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills across departments.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making ability under tight timelines.
