Product Design Engineer - Scientific Instruments & Opto-Mechanical Systems
Employment Type: Full-time, On-site
Experience: Preferably 2-5 years
Department: Product Development and R&D
About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on Product Design Engineer to design and develop scientific instruments and environmental-monitoring products.
The selected candidate will work on the complete physical design of products, including optical systems, instrument architecture, mechanical components, enclosures and integration of electronics, sensors and user-interface components.
This role requires someone who can convert a functional concept into a working prototype and subsequently into a reliable, manufacturable and commercially deployable product.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop product concepts, system layouts and detailed mechanical designs for scientific instruments
- Design opto-mechanical assemblies for photometric, optical and sensor-based measurement systems
- Support the selection and integration of suitable light sources, detectors, lenses, filters and other optical components
- Design optical chambers, mounts, holders and alignment mechanisms while controlling ambient light and internal reflections
- Design mechanical enclosures incorporating PCBs, sensors, displays, batteries, printers, connectors and other components
- Create 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings and manufacturing specifications
- Develop prototypes using 3D printing, CNC machining and other rapid-prototyping methods
- Evaluate materials, tolerances, sealing, ergonomics, durability and environmental protection requirements
- Apply Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly principles
- Support enclosure development for injection moulding, vacuum forming, sheet metal or other suitable manufacturing processes
- Conduct fitment, alignment, tolerance and functional testing of prototypes
- Work closely with electronics, firmware, chemistry, software and manufacturing teams
- Coordinate with component suppliers, toolmakers, mould manufacturers and fabrication vendors
- Prepare bills of materials, drawings, revision records and technical documentation
- Support pilot production, troubleshooting, design improvements and transfer to manufacturing
- Protect confidential product designs, technical information and intellectual property
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Instrumentation Engineering, Product Design, Optical Engineering or a related discipline
- Relevant experience in mechanical product design and development
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD modelling and mechanical assemblies
- Understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, tolerances and component fitment
- Experience developing functional prototypes and testing design iterations
- Ability to integrate mechanical, electronic and optical components within compact instruments
- Strong problem-solving, documentation and project-execution skills
Preferred Technical Skills
- Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- 3D printing, CNC machining and rapid prototyping
- Injection-moulded plastic-part design and tooling coordination
- Optical component selection and basic optical-system design
- Ray-tracing or optical-simulation software such as Zemax OpticStudio, TracePro or equivalent
- Design of light-tight optical assemblies and precision component mounts
- IP-rated enclosure design, gaskets, sealing and environmental protection
- Thermal management and electronic-component packaging
- Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly
- Prototype validation, tolerance analysis and design-failure investigation
Preferred Industry Exposure
- Analytical or laboratory instruments
- Photometers, colorimeters or spectrophotometric systems
- Environmental-monitoring or water-testing equipment
- Medical or diagnostic devices
- Portable electronic instruments
- Sensor-based or IoT hardware products
- Industrial instrumentation
Candidate Profile
- Enjoys building and testing physical products
- Can move from concept sketches to CAD, prototype and production
- Understands that product design involves functionality, accuracy and manufacturability - not only appearance
- Can independently troubleshoot mechanical and opto-mechanical problems
- Works effectively with multidisciplinary technical teams
- Can manage vendors and follow prototypes through multiple design iterations
- Maintains proper drawings, records and version control
- Is willing to travel when required for technical collaboration, prototyping or vendor development
Location Requirement
This is a full-time, on-site position based in Amravati, Maharashtra.
Candidates should apply only if they are currently based in Amravati or are genuinely willing to relocate and work from Amravati.
Application Requirements
- Examples of CAD models, prototypes or instruments personally developed
- Brief explanation of their contribution to each project
- Details of CAD and simulation software used
- Current location, notice period and compensation expectations
