We are looking for a skilled and motivated Optics Design Engineer to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, analyzing, simulating, and optimizing optical systems for imaging, illumination, sensing, or other optoelectronic applications.
The role requires strong fundamentals in optical engineering, hands‑on experience with optical design and simulation tools, and the ability to collaborate with mechanical, electrical, electronics, and manufacturing teams to develop products from concept through production.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop optical systems including imaging, illumination, projection, laser, and sensing systems.
- Perform optical system analysis, modeling, simulation, optimization, and tolerance analysis.
- Develop optical architectures and select appropriate lenses, mirrors, filters, coatings, light sources, detectors, and other optical components.
- Create and optimize optical designs using tools such as Zemax OpticStudio, CODE V, LightTools, or equivalent software.
- Analyze optical performance parameters such as MTF, PSF, distortion, aberration, stray light, irradiance, uniformity, throughput, and resolution.
- Conduct tolerance analysis and sensitivity studies to ensure robust system performance under manufacturing and assembly variations.
- Work closely with mechanical engineers to define optical packaging, alignment, mounting, and integration requirements.
- Collaborate with electrical, electronics, firmware, and systems teams for optoelectronic system integration.
- Support prototype development, optical alignment, testing, characterization, and troubleshooting.
- Define optical specifications and test methods and analyze experimental results against simulation.
- Select and evaluate optical components and suppliers based on technical requirements, performance, cost, and manufacturability.
- Prepare optical drawings, specifications, reports, and technical documentation.
- Support Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and production ramp‑up activities.
- Investigate root causes of optical performance issues and implement corrective actions.
- Contribute to new product development, technology evaluation, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 25 years of relevant experience in optical design and development, depending on level.
- Strong understanding of geometrical and physical optics.
- Hands‑on experience with optical design and simulation software such as Zemax OpticStudio, CODE V, LightTools, TracePro, or equivalent.
- Good understanding of optical aberrations, image quality, illumination, radiometry, photometry, and optical tolerancing.
- Experience with optical component selection and optical system integration.
- Ability to interpret optical drawings, specifications, and manufacturing tolerances.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and experimental skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and technical documentation tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with imaging optics, camera systems, machine vision, laser optics, illumination systems, LiDAR, AR/VR, or optical sensing.
- Experience with stray‑light analysis and ghost analysis.
- Experience with optical alignment and characterization equipment.
- Knowledge of optical coatings, materials, detectors, and light sources.
- Experience with scripting/programming using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for optical analysis and automation.
