Job Overview
JJG Aero Pvt. Ltd. is looking for an experienced Design Manager Aerospace with 8–12+ years of relevant experience of process planning & design in aerospace component design, engineering, and product development.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands‑on expertise in CATIA V5/V6 and SolidWorks, excellent knowledge of aerospace component design, GD&T, DFM/DFA, manufacturing processes, and the ability to lead a design engineering team.
The Design Manager will be responsible for managing design projects from concept and customer requirements through detailed design, design validation, manufacturing support, and engineering changes, while ensuring technical quality, cost, manufacturability, and delivery commitments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design & Engineering Leadership
- Lead and manage the aerospace design engineering team and allocate projects based on technical capability and project requirements.
- Review and approve 3D models, assemblies, 2D manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation.
- Drive the design and development of aerospace components, machined parts, assemblies, and sub-assemblies.
- Develop robust design solutions considering performance, weight, cost, manufacturability, reliability, and customer requirements.
- Provide technical guidance to Design Engineers and Junior Engineers on complex design challenges.
- Establish design standards, best practices, modelling methodologies, and engineering processes.
2. Customer & Project Management
- Understand customer requirements, specifications, drawings, CAD models, and technical documentation.
- Participate in customer technical discussions, design reviews, and engineering meetings.
- Act as the technical interface between customers, design, manufacturing, quality, estimation, and engineering teams.
- Manage multiple design projects and ensure timely completion of engineering deliverables.
- Support RFQ, feasibility, costing, and new product development activities from the design perspective.
3. CAD & Product Development
- Ensure effective use of CATIA V5/V6 and SolidWorks for 3D modelling, assembly design, drafting, and design modifications.
- Review complex part and assembly designs for dimensional accuracy, functionality, manufacturability, and assembly requirements.
- Lead design optimisation, redesign, value engineering, and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Support development of tooling, fixtures, jigs, and manufacturing aids where required.
4. Aerospace Standards & Engineering Practices
- Ensure designs comply with applicable aerospace standards, customer specifications, engineering procedures, and quality requirements.
- Strong understanding of GD&T, AS9100, ASME Y14.5, drawing standards, tolerance stack-up, configuration control, and engineering change management.
- Ensure proper control and revision of drawings, models, BOMs, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Participate in design risk assessments, technical reviews, and engineering problem-solving activities.
5. Manufacturing & Production Support
- Work closely with manufacturing, CNC machining, production engineering, quality, and inspection teams to ensure design manufacturability.
- Resolve design-related production issues and provide technical solutions.
- Review machining feasibility, tolerances, tooling requirements, inspection requirements, and process limitations.
- Identify opportunities for cycle-time reduction, material optimisation, process improvement, and cost reduction.
- Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for recurring design/manufacturing issues.
6. New Product Development & NPD
- Lead design activities for new product development from concept to production.
- Support prototype development, first-off production, validation, and customer approval.
- Coordinate with NPD, quality, manufacturing, and inspection teams for FAI/AS9102 requirements.
- Support APQP/PPAP activities where applicable to customer requirements.
- Ensure design outputs are complete and released on schedule for production.
7. Engineering Change Management
- Review and control Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
- Evaluate the technical, manufacturing, quality, and cost impact of design changes.
- Ensure all design revisions are properly documented and implemented.
- Maintain configuration control of customer and internal engineering data.
8. Team Development & Performance Management
- Mentor and develop Design Engineers and senior design team members.
- Conduct technical reviews and provide feedback on design quality and engineering performance.
- Identify training requirements and develop technical competency within the design team.
- Build a strong engineering culture focused on accuracy, innovation, ownership, and on‑time delivery.
9. Continuous Improvement
- Drive engineering initiatives for cost reduction, weight optimisation, design simplification, manufacturability improvement, and cycle‑time reduction.
- Introduce standardisation and design reuse wherever practical.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, productivity, and design turnaround time.
- Stay updated on aerospace design technologies, materials, manufacturing technologies, and industry best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 8–12+ years of experience in aerospace design and engineering.
- Minimum 3–5 years in a senior/lead/managerial design role is preferred.
- Strong hands‑on experience in CATIA V5/V6 and SolidWorks.
- Strong experience in aerospace components, precision machined parts, assemblies, or sub-assemblies.
- Excellent knowledge of GD&T and ASME Y14.5.
- Strong understanding of aerospace materials and manufacturing processes.
- Strong knowledge of DFM/DFA, tolerance stack-up, design validation, and engineering change management.
- Experience working with aerospace OEMs, Tier‑1 suppliers, or aerospace manufacturing companies.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with ENOVIA, 3DEXPERIENCE, Windchill, Teamcenter, or other PLM/PDM systems.
- Knowledge of AS9100 and AS9102/FAI requirements.
- Exposure to NPD, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and design risk management.
- Knowledge of CNC machining, 3-axis/4-axis/5-axis machining, turning, grinding, and precision manufacturing.
- Exposure to tooling, fixtures, inspection methodologies, CMM/VMM, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience in value engineering and design cost reduction.
- Knowledge of simulation/analysis tools such as ANSYS, NASTRAN, or similar is an advantage.
- Strong project management, leadership, communication, and customer-facing skills.
