Job summary

Worldpay is seeking a Principal Engineer (Java Backend) to lead the design and delivery of scalable payment services. You will own end-to-end backend components, architect microservices, and collaborate with global teams to drive high-impact results.

The role requires a strong background in Java, Spring, REST, and databases, with experience in CI/CD and production support. You will mentor others and contribute to security and quality practices across the stack.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in Java backend development with enterprise-grade systems.
• Hands-on Java (17+), Spring, Spring MVC, Spring Boot, REST services.
• Experience designing microservices and production-grade services.
• Familiarity with cloud basics (AWS), databases (SQL/NoSQL).
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and security/QA tooling.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end backend design and implementation for payment products.
• Architect and maintain microservices with scalable, robust solutions.
• Collaborate with global teams and stakeholders across levels.
• Ensure code quality via SonarQube, security checks and tests.
• Monitor and troubleshoot live services; optimize performance.

What You’ll Own

• Knowledge of end-to-end systems development life cycles (e.g., waterfall, iterative, and other modern software development approaches).
• Knowledge of standards relevant to the software industry (e.g., ISO, CMM, Six Sigma).
• Knowledge of Payment products and services; in-depth knowledge of products and services within the assigned line(s) of business.
• Knowledge of E-commerce and POS Payment practices, regulations, and operations within the assigned line(s) of business.
• In-depth understanding of design patterns and their application.
• Fluency in developing and interpreting sequence diagrams, class models, and similar artifacts.
• Proficiency in solution design and requirements definition disciplines, leveraging model-driven design tools and techniques, including conceptual solution component models, business process models, and use cases.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences at all organizational levels (e.g., executives, management, individual contributors).
• Excellent analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, team, and time-management skills.
• Ability to persuade and influence others on the best approach to take.
• Ability to estimate work effort for project sub-plans or small projects and ensure successful completion.
• Positive outlook, strong work ethic, and responsiveness to internal and external clients and stakeholders.
• Willingly and effectively fulfils the role of teacher, mentor, and coach.
• May require in-depth knowledge of networking, computing platforms, storage, databases, security, middleware, network and systems management, and related infrastructure technologies and practices.

What You’ll Bring

• Minimum 10 years of experience in developing Java application or services.
• Knowledge and hands on experience on Java (preferably Java 17 and above), Spring, Spring MVC, (Spring batch will be a plus), Spring boot, Restful Web services, any SQL DB like Postgres DB, MySQL, NoSql DB like Cassandra, Dynamo DB, message streaming framework like Apache Kafka, ActiveMQ.
• Basic understanding on AWS and its services like S3, RDS.
• Knowledge and experience on designing, developing, and maintaining Microservices using the latest technologies.
• Knowledge and experience in developing, maintaining and supporting services live in production.
• Should have worked on Quality assurance tools like SonarQube, BlackDuck , Checkmarx, Snyk or any similar tool.
• Should have worked and has experience in using CICD environment used for deployments.
• Should have good understanding on Splunk and able to effectively write Splunk q
• Little or basic understanding on the DevOps or Network layer of a Microservice.
