Job summary

HSBC Software Development India is seeking an experienced Senior Consultant Specialist to administer PostgreSQL databases across Dev/UAT/Prod environments. You will ensure high availability, reliability, and performance, and design backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures with zero/low downtime.

You will also configure replication and monitor health, security, and capacity while supporting production incidents.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with a backend focus.
• Mandatory PostgreSQL 12+ in production environments.
• Strong Linux, Bash/Python, pgBackRest, psql, and monitoring skills.
• Experience with HA/DR, replication, and failover strategies.
• Excellent SQL and data modeling capabilities.
• On-call production support and incident management experience.

Responsibilities

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Senior Consultant Specialist.

In this role, you will:

• Administer and maintain PostgreSQL databases across Dev/UAT/Prod environments.
• Ensure high availability, reliability, and performance of mission-critical databases.
• Design and manage backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures (RPO/RTO aligned).
• Configure and support replication and failover (streaming replication, logical replication, Patroni/repmgr or equivalent).
• Perform proactive performance tuning at query, index, schema, and configuration levels.
• Monitor database health, capacity, and security posture; implement alerts and runbooks.
• Manage schema changes, releases, and migrations with zero/low downtime approaches.
• Support production incidents, RCA, and preventive actions.Implement and enforce security controls: roles/privileges, encryption, audit/compliance.
• Partner with application teams on SQL optimization, data modeling, and access patterns.
• Automate repetitive DBA tasks using scripting and infrastructure tooling.Maintain operational documentation and ensure audit readiness.

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong backend focus.
• Mandatory Technologies: PostgreSQL 12+ (or as applicable), Linux, Bash/Python, pgBackRest, psql, pg_stat_statements, Monitoring stack (Prometheus/Grafana or equivalent), Git, CI/CD tooling, Ticketing and runbook platforms, Devops Tools – Jira, Confluence
• Strong hands-on PostgreSQL administration experience in production environments.
• Deep understanding of PostgreSQL internals: MVCC, WAL, vacuum/autovacuum, checkpoints, locks.
• Performance tuning expertise (EXPLAIN/ANALYZE, indexing strategy, bloat management, partitioning).
• Strong SQL and data modeling skills.
• Experience with backup/recovery tools (pgBackRest, WAL archiving, PITR).
• HA/DR implementation experience (replication/failover). Linux administration fundamentals and shell scripting.
• Monitoring/observability experience (Prometheus/Grafana/Datadog/CloudWatch or similar).
• Incident management and on-call production support experience. Good communication and cross-team collaboration skills
