Job description

JOB PURPOSE

To diagnose and treatment of patients with eye disorders.

WORK RELATIONS

Main interfaces- with whom do you have regular contact in carrying out your duties (whom do you report to/who do you functionally report to/whom do you have interface within and outside the organization?)

Internal Interface Unit Head, Doctors, Technicians, HOD of other concerned departments

External Interface – Patients, Medical representatives.

CRITICAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Diagnose eye disorders in its structure including the eyelids, cornea, sclera, conjunctiva, etc.
  • Treat minor and major eye trauma or injuries.
  • Prescribe ophthalmologic therapies such as, cryotherapy, chemotherapy and low vision therapy.
  • Conduct thorough test of the visual system to determine severity and nature of ocular disorder.
  • Perform ophthalmic surgeries like refractive, eye muscle, cataract, glaucoma, corneal, ceroplastic, and vitro-retinal surgeries.
  • Perform laser surgeries to alter, excise or reshape ocular tissue.
  • Design and develop treatment plans based on patients’ medical histories and objectives, the severity of disorder, and therapeutic risks and benefits.
  • Prescribe or refer to Optometrists for proper corrective lenses such as glasses and contact lenses.
  • Prescribe topical or systemic medications to treat ophthalmic conditions and to manage pain.
  • Keep abreast with trends in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases

  • Medical & Scientific Knowledge
  • Ophthalmic Anatomy and Physiology:
  • Deep understanding of the eye, its adnexa, and the visual system, including how they change with development and disease.
  • Ophthalmic Pathology and Diseases:
  • Knowledge of eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, as well as their causes and treatment options.
  • Optics and Refraction:
  • Understanding of light, vision, refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), and the clinical application of optics to correct vision.
  • General Medicine:
  • Awareness of how systemic medical conditions, such as diabetes, can affect eye health.
Clinical & Surgical Skills
  • Eye Exams: Ability to conduct thorough eye examinations to diagnose issues.
  • Diagnostic Procedures: Proficiency in using instruments like indirect ophthalmoscopes and tonometers.
  • Prescribing Corrective Lenses: Competence in prescribing and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Medication Management: Ability to prescribe oral and topical medications to treat eye diseases.
  • Emergency Care: Competence in managing both medical and surgical ophthalmic emergencies.
