We are looking for an experienced Injection Mold Designer responsible for designing precision plastic injection molds from product/component drawings and 3D models.
The candidate should have strong knowledge of mold design, parting lines, core & cavity design, slides/lifters, ejection systems, cooling systems, hot/cold runners, mold materials and standard mold components.
The ideal candidate should be capable of taking a component from DFM review through complete mold design and manufacturing documentation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Injection Mold Design
- Design complete plastic injection molds based on 2D drawings and 3D component models.
- Develop:
- Core and cavity
- Parting surfaces
- Inserts
- Sliders
- Lifters
- Ejector systems
- Sprue, runner and gate systems
- Cooling circuits
- Mold bases
- Guide and locating systems
- Select appropriate mold construction and standard components.
2. DFM & Mold Feasibility
- Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews.
- Analyze:
- Draft angles
- Wall thickness
- Undercuts
- Parting lines
- Sink marks
- Weld lines
- Ejection feasibility
- Gate location
- Cooling requirements
- Identify potential molding problems before mold manufacturing.
3. CAD Design
- Create detailed 3D mold assemblies and individual component designs.
- Prepare detailed 2D manufacturing drawings with appropriate:
- Dimensions
- Tolerances
- GD&T
- Surface finishes
- Material specifications
- Heat-treatment requirements
4. Mold Manufacturing Support
- Work closely with toolmakers, CNC programmers, EDM operators and machinists.
- Review manufacturability of mold components.
- Resolve design issues during mold manufacturing.
- Make necessary design modifications based on manufacturing feedback.
5. Mold Trials & Corrections
- Support mold trials and analyze molding issues.
- Work with the molding team to identify causes of:
- Flash
- Short shots
- Sink marks
- Warpage
- Ejection problems
- Weld lines
- Dimensional variation
- Incorporate required modifications into mold design.
6. Documentation
- Prepare and maintain:
- Mold assembly drawings
- Part drawings
- BOM
- Mold component drawings
- Revision history
- Mold design standards
- Design checklists
