Job summary

BMW TechWorks India Private Limited seeks a senior BIW design leader to translate styling intent into manufacturable BIW solutions for premium vehicle standards. You will lead a BIW module team within the Digital Product Engineering cluster and collaborate across global design, CAE, manufacturing, and suppliers.

The role requires 15+ years in automotive BIW design, strong CAD/PLM skills (CATIA V5/V6, 3DX, Teamcenter, ENOVIA), and proven leadership in matrix organizations.

Job description

• You will lead the development of Body Side & Fixed Roof BIW structures, translating styling intent (CAS/Class-A surfaces) into robust, manufacturable engineering solutions aligned with premium vehicle standards.
• You will collaborate closely with global stakeholders, including Munich COC teams and cross-functional engineering groups, driving alignment across design, CAE, manufacturing, and suppliers.

• Lead BIW module delivery within the Digital Product Engineering cluster (Unit CAD – Body Structures), ensuring quality, timing, cost, and weight targets are consistently achieved.
• Drive collaboration with design studios to ensure seamless integration of styling intent into engineering feasibility while maintaining structural integrity and manufacturability.
• Mentor and guide a team of engineers, fostering technical capability, design best practices, and program ownership mindset.
• Operate in a fast-paced global environment, actively contributing to cross-functional decision-making, risk mitigation, and continuous knowledge sharing across projects.

What should you bring along

• Strong expertise in BIW design and development, with deep understanding of body structures, vehicle architecture, and integration of styling intent into engineering solutions.
• Proven leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively work with global design, CAE, manufacturing, and program teams, including close coordination with Munich stakeholders.
• Excellent communication skills in English; knowledge of German is an added advantage.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical / Automotive Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum 15+ years of experience in automotive BIW design & development, with successful delivery of at least 2 full vehicle programs from concept to production.
• Strong proficiency in CAD tools (CATIA V5/V6, 3DX) and PLM systems, along with good knowledge of GD&T, manufacturing processes, and product validation.
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex projects, and drive decision-making in a matrix organization.
• Proactive, result-oriented mindset with strong ownership, problem-solving capabilities, and focus on quality, cost, and timeline adherence.

Must have technical skill

• Proficiency in CAD tools such as CATIA V5/V6 / 3DX, with strong experience in 3D modeling, detailing, and drawing release.
• Solid knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and dimensional management principles.
• Good understanding of vehicle architecture, crash requirements, and structural performance considerations.
• Experience working with PLM tools (Teamcenter, ENOVIA, or equivalent) for data management and engineering release processes.
• Strong ability to translate Class-A (CAS) surfaces into feasible BIW design while maintaining styling intent and manufacturability.
• Familiarity with design validation processes, including interaction with CAE for structural, durability, and safety requirements.
• Experience in cost optimization, weight reduction, and value engineering methodologies.
• Good understanding of supplier tooling, manufacturing feasibility, and production readiness (Tooling & SOP phases).
• Exposure to digital engineering tools, automation, and emerging technologies (e.g., parametric design, AI-assisted engineering) is an added advantage.

Good to have skills

• Exposure to Design for Manufacturing ( DfM ) and Design for Assembly ( DfA ) principles, ensuring optimized and production-ready BIW designs.
• Experience in early concept feasibility assessment, supporting rapid design iterations while maintaining engineering robustness and program constraints.
• Familiarity with dimensional validation, tolerance management, and integration of styling inputs into BIW feasibility studies.
• Exposure to digital engineering practices, including automation, parametric modelling approaches, and emerging technologies in product development.
• Ability to support innovation, lightweighting , and cost optimization initiatives during concept and development phases.
