Mechanical Engineering / Maintenance Manager

Role Overview

The Mechanical Engineer / Maintenance Manager will be responsible for ensuring smooth functioning, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of all mechanical and electrical equipment in the tea estate, including tea processing machinery, vehicles, generators, irrigation systems, and estate utilities. The role involves planning, implementing, and supervising maintenance schedules, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee maintenance, repair, and efficient operation of tea processing machinery, withering troughs, dryers, rollers, sorters, and other factory equipment.
  • Manage maintenance of estate vehicles, tractors, pumps, irrigation systems, and power generation units.
  • Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure availability of critical spare parts and maintain stock of essential consumables.
  • Supervise and guide a team of mechanics, fitters, electricians, and maintenance staff.
  • Coordinate with factory and field teams to minimize production downtime.
  • Prepare maintenance budgets, monitor expenses, and ensure cost‑effective operations.
  • Implement safety procedures and statutory compliance related to machinery and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot breakdowns and provide quick technical solutions.
  • Liaise with external contractors, vendors, and service providers for specialized maintenance work.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to increase machinery efficiency and equipment life.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 5–10 years of relevant experience in machinery maintenance, preferably in tea/coffee estates, plantations, or agro‑processing industries.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical systems, and industrial safety practices.
  • Experience in managing teams and coordinating cross‑functional operations.
  • Good understanding of preventive and predictive maintenance practices.
  • Ability to work in remote estate environments with hands‑on problem‑solving skills.
