Job summary

Onward Technologies Bengaluru is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for Rail/Locomotive projects. You will drive component-level changes through toll gates, support design reviews, and coordinate with CAD/PD teams and customers to close actions.

The role requires 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, familiarity with UG NX and Teamcenter, and strong knowledge of drawing standards and BOM release. Immediate to 20 days.

Qualifications

• 5 to 15 years of mechanical design engineering experience, preferably in locomotive, rail, heavy equipment, off-highway, structural systems or large mechanical assemblies.
• Hands-on component design, subsystem integration, and design release experience.
• Experience with toll gate reviews, ECR/ECN process, drawing release, and BOM review.
• Experience coordinating with CAD/PD teams, FEA teams, manufacturing, and customer engineering teams.
• Understanding of structural parts, brackets, weldments, ducting, piping, cabling, mounting, interfaces, and serviceability.

Role Summary

The engineer will be responsible for driving component-level engineering changes through the Engineering Toll Gates process and supporting formal/informal design reviews.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead component-level engineering reviews through applicable toll gates:
• Component Concept Selection
• Component Design Details and Validation Plan
• Component Validation Results and Drawing Release
• Prepare and support formal design reviews and informal technical reviews.
• Identify whether a change requires concept review, detailed design review, FEA, validation planning, ECN review or drawing release.
• Work with Product Engineering / customer stakeholders to close review comments and technical actions.
• Review the cleaned-up CAD model and identify major changes.
• Develop and evaluate design concepts for significant component or subsystem changes.
• Support concept selection for changes involving packaging, mounting, ducting, piping, cabling, structural interfaces, brackets, equipment relocation or component replacement.
• Create ECRs for required changes.
• Guide the Product Definition team for CAD model changes, drawing revisions and BOM updates.
• Prepare or support DFMEA, verification requirements, validation plans and test plan inputs where required.
• Define verification requirements for FEA team based on component criticality and design change impact.
• Coordinate review of FEA results and ensure design recommendations are incorporated into CAD and drawings.
• Review affected drawings and BOM changes prepared by Product Definition engineers.
• Review and approve ECNs.
• Work with PD team to close CAD, drawing, BOM and ECN-related actions.

Required Experience

• 5 to 15 years of mechanical design engineering experience, preferably in locomotive, rail, heavy equipment, off-highway, structural systems or large mechanical assemblies.
• Hands-on experience in component design, subsystem integration, design review preparation and engineering release processes.
• Experience with design toll gate reviews, engineering change management, ECR/ECN process, drawing release and BOM review.
• Experience coordinating with CAD/PD teams, FEA teams, manufacturing teams and customer engineering teams.
• Practical understanding of structural parts, brackets, weldments, ducting, cooling packages, piping, cabling, equipment mounting, platform interfaces and serviceability requirements.

Preferred Domain Knowledge

• Past experience with GE in toll gate reviews.
• Locomotive experience.
• Drawing, BOM and ECN release process.

Tool / Process Knowledge

• CAD tools such as UG NX .
• Teamcenter exposure.
• Drawing and BOM release process.
• ECR / ECN process.
• FEA coordination.
• Design review documentation.
• Knowledge of tools/processes such as Teamcenter, ECR and ECN.

Required Skills

• Strong mechanical design and engineering judgement.
• Ability to guide CAD/PD engineers on design intent.
• Good understanding of drawing standards, GD&T, BOM structure and release process.
• Strong communication with customer engineering teams.
• Ability to manage technical reviews and close open issues.
• Ability to identify design risks early and convert them into clear actions.
