Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage inbound and outbound logistics for steel products.
  • Negotiate contracts with transporters and logistics providers.
  • Monitor freight costs and optimize routes to reduce TAT.
  • Coordinate with production, dispatch, sales, and warehouse teams.
  • Ensure GST, e-way bills, and documentation compliance.
  • Lead logistics and dispatch teams and report KPIs to management.

Job description

Job Summary

The Logistics Head is responsible for planning, managing, and optimizing end-to-end logistics operations for steel manufacturing, including inbound raw materials, internal movement, and outbound finished goods. The role ensures cost efficiency, timely deliveries, compliance with statutory requirements, and seamless coordination with production, sales, and external logistics partners.

Key Responsibilities
Inbound & Outbound Logistics
  • Manage transportation of raw materials (iron ore, coal, scrap, alloys, etc.) and finished steel products.
  • Ensure timely dispatch of finished goods to customers, depots, and ports.
  • Optimize route planning, freight modes (road, rail, sea), and load utilization.
Logistics Planning & Cost Control
  • Develop logistics strategies to reduce freight cost and improve turnaround time (TAT).
  • Negotiate contracts with transporters, fleet owners, and logistics service providers.
  • Monitor freight bills, verify invoices, and control logistics budgets.
Vendor & Transporter Management
  • Empanel, evaluate, and manage transporters and clearing & forwarding (C&F) agents.
  • Ensure transporter compliance with safety, statutory, and company policies.
  • Resolve logistics-related disputes, delays, and claims.
Coordination & Operations
  • Coordinate closely with production, dispatch, sales, and warehouse teams.
  • Ensure smooth material flow without impacting production schedules.
  • Handle urgent dispatches, shortages, and contingency logistics planning.
Compliance & Documentation
  • Ensure compliance with GST, E-way bills, weighment, permits, and statutory norms.
  • Oversee documentation for domestic and export shipments.
  • Ensure safety standards in loading, unloading, and transportation.
Team Leadership & Reporting
  • Lead and develop the logistics and dispatch team.
  • Track KPIs such as freight cost per MT, delivery adherence, damages, and transit losses.
  • Prepare MIS reports and present performance reviews to management.
Key Skills & Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of steel logistics and heavy material transportation
  • Expertise in freight negotiation and cost optimization
  • Understanding of GST, E-way bill, and transport regulations
  • Vendor management and operational problem-solving
  • ERP / SAP / Logistics management systems
  • Leadership, communication, and coordination skills
Qualification & Experience
  • Education: Graduate in Engineering / Supply Chain / Logistics / Operations (MBA preferred)
  • Experience: 1015 years in logistics operations, preferably in steel, metals, or heavy manufacturing
  • Experience handling high-volume, multi-location logistics operations is essential
