Job description

Responsibilities

• Manage the buying process for a given set of goods, applying sourcing policy and interfacing between suppliers and the entity with respect to specifications and budgets.
• Understand market dynamics and support strategies for assigned commodities, proactively driving initiatives to meet sourcing objectives.
• Support commodity buys and assess supplier capabilities, making recommendations on purchases with new vendor developments.
• Act as a functional expert for the development and negotiation of purchasing contracts, providing contracting expertise across the organization.
• Take initiatives and propose vendor development, cost reductions, lead‑time reductions and lean practices.
• Manage supplier relationships in the best interest of the company, working across factory teams and in tandem with Engineering, Shop, MMI, Process specialists, Quality, Purchase and Logistics teams to ensure timely supplies.
• Prepare RFQs based on technical information and requirements, perform cost estimation, quotation tabulation and prepare budgetary cost consumption data.
• Negotiate with selected vendors, leading negotiations with key suppliers to secure favorable pricing and terms.
• Place orders with suitable vendors, considering cost, supplier qualification, technical competency, budget and delivery.
• Monitor supplier performance and drive improvement plans, maintaining strong relationships with existing suppliers and building new relationships to diversify the supply base.
• Assess and mitigate risks associated with suppliers, such as supply chain disruptions or quality issues.
• Align KPIs and strategize goals in accordance with the function’s KPIs (Spend, Payment Terms, deflation, OTD, PR to PO cycle, etc.).
• Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to define sourcing requirements, ensuring alignment with operational needs.
• Leverage procurement knowledge for forging, valve internals, bearings, commodity management, medium and heavy component machining, and special processes.
• Develop and implement procurement strategies, including sourcing, vendor selection and contract negotiation for new supplier development drives.
• Identify potential suppliers in India and low‑cost countries, driving new supplier development and qualification initiatives (localisation, supplier onboarding, product qualification process).
• Coordinate with key commodity leaders for global benchmarking and drive initiatives to develop critical components in India, including small mechanical parts.
• Engage in stakeholder networking for effective problem solving, providing 100% material visibility and tracking across the organization.
• Lead or participate in supplier performance improvement/rating programmes and create an idea pool to drive actions that achieve year‑on‑year deflation and lead‑time reduction targets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (preferably a Master of Engineering) with strong business acumen and a holistic understanding of cross‑functional working in a business environment.
• 10–15 years of experience in sourcing, procurement, project management or a related field, with a basic commercial awareness.
• Basic knowledge of order management and scheduling.
• Experience in turbine &generator manufacturing industries or knowledge of turbine &generator parts is preferable.
• Proactive, problem‑solving attitude with networking and communication skills.
• Organisational skills including prioritisation and resource deployment.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
• Global sourcing experience is preferable.
