ShopTrade (Shopify Premier Agency) is seeking a Lead Frontend Engineer (Shopify) to head a pod and own the technical and people leadership of complex Shopify engagements. This leadership-first role sets technical direction, grows the team, drives delivery, and aligns with product, design, and client stakeholders.

You will spend time in architecture reviews, planning, mentorship, hiring, and removing blockers.

Qualifications

• 5+ years software engineering with 3+ years in a Tech Lead/Engineering Management role.
• Proven experience leading teams and delivering complex Shopify-based products.
• Strong expertise in the Shopify ecosystem (Shopify Plus, Metafields, Metaobjects).

Responsibilities

• Own the technical architecture across multiple Shopify engagements.
• Define engineering standards including CI/CD, security, observability and release management.
• Lead technical discovery, design, estimation, risk assessment and key technology decisions.
• Mentor and grow a team of 4–8 engineers; drive coaching and career development.

Position - Lead Frontend Engineer (Shopify)

About the Role

We are looking for a Frontend Tech Lead to head one of our engineering pods and own the technical and people leadership of complex Shopify engagements. This is a leadership-first role: you will set the technical direction, grow and mentor the team, drive delivery, and be the engineering counterpart to product, design, and client stakeholders. You will spend most of your time leading — architecture reviews, technical planning, mentorship, hiring, stakeholder alignment, and unblocking the team — while staying close enough to the code to make sharp, well-informed decisions. Key Responsibilities

a. Technical Leadership

• Own the technical architecture and quality across multiple Shopify engagements.
• Define engineering standards including code quality, CI/CD, security, observability, release management, and architecture best practices.
• Lead technical discovery, solution design, estimation, risk assessment, and key technology decisions.
• Champion performance, accessibility, SEO, Core Web Vitals, reliability, and security.
• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 4–8 engineers.
• Drive coaching, performance reviews, goal setting, and career development.
• Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.
• Plan team capacity and support technical growth across the pod.

c. Delivery & Stakeholder Management

• Collaborate with Product, Design, Project Management, and clients on planning, prioritization, and risk mitigation.
• Lead architecture discussions, communicate technical decisions and risks, and drive continuous engineering improvements.
• Lead technical hiring, onboarding, and engineering documentation.
• Partner with the CTO/Head of Engineering to strengthen engineering strategy, tooling, and culture.

Required Skills

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in a Tech Lead, Staff Engineer, or Engineering Management role.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex, customer-facing products.
• Strong expertise in the Shopify ecosystem, including Shopify Plus, Themes, Custom Apps, Metaobjects, Metafields, and Headless Storefronts.
• Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and mentoring, hiring, and growing engineering teams.
• Strategic thinker with strong technical judgment, high engineering standards, and the ability to make informed decisions, manage client escalations, and lead effectively under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with API testing and third-party integrations (e.g., payment gateways and shipping apps).
• Experience working in an agency or consulting environment managing multiple concurrent client engagements.
• Experience leading headless commerce implementations using Hydrogen, Next.js Commerce, or Remix.
• Experience scaling engineering teams and defining competency frameworks, career ladders, or interview processes.
• Contributions to technical writing, conference speaking, or open-source projects.

Qualifications

• 5–8 years of experience in Shopify development or a related role.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Experience with Shopify development, including Metaobjects and Metafields, is an advantage.
• Proven leadership portfolio demonstrating successful team leadership, product delivery, engineer development, and architectural decision-making.
