Role
Lead Engineer- Rear Shock Absorber and Rear Spring (Passenger Car)
- You will shape the future BMW vehicles dynamics by bringing brake systems to life through precise CAD modelling, Concept and engineering execution.
- Contribute to concept development, engineering design, and CAD execution of rear suspension components and modules.
- Develop and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings for rear shock absorbers, coil springs, and associated mounting systems.
- Support suspension package studies, vehicle integration activities, prototype development, testing, validation, and production implementation.
- Work closely with Vehicle Dynamics, CAE, Testing, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Supplier Engineering teams throughout the product development cycle.
- Ensure compliance with ride, handling, durability, NVH, safety, weight, cost, and manufacturing requirements.
- Support engineering change management, issue resolution, and continuous improvement activities during vehicle development programs.
What should you bring along
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 8-12 years of experience in automotive suspension system design and development for passenger cars.
- Knowledge of automotive design standards, engineering release processes, and product development methodologies.
- Experience working with OEMs or Tier-1 suppliers in wheel product development.
- Proactive, teamwork-oriented mindset with the ability to operate in a matrix environment.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Proficiency in English, additional German language skills are an advantage.
Must have technical skill
- Design and development of rear shock absorber systems
- Strong understanding of damping characteristics including: Compression Damping, Rebound Damping, Low-Speed and High-Speed Damping, Ride Comfort Tuning, Handling Performance Optimization
- Knowledge of shock absorber internal components including: Piston Rod, Piston Assembly, Valve Systems, Pressure Tube, Reservoir Tube, Sealing Systems, Hydraulic Fluid Management
- Experience in mounting and interface design for upper and lower shock absorber attachments.
- Understanding of shock absorber durability, fatigue life, corrosion protection, and sealing requirements.
- Rear Spring Design and development of rear suspension spring systems including: Coil Springs, Progressive Springs, Variable Rate Springs, Air Springs, Composite Springs
- Strong understanding of spring rate calculations, load-deflection characteristics, ride height management, and vehicle load carrying requirements.
- Knowledge of spring packaging and integration with rear suspension architectures.
- Experience in spring seat design, spring isolators, spring pads, and mounting interfaces.
- Understanding of spring endurance, sag resistance, fatigue performance, and material selection.
- Strong understanding of suspension kinematics and compliance characteristics.
- Knowledge of wheel travel, rebound, jounce, suspension articulation, and dynamic wheel control requirements.
- Knowledge of Ride & Handling targets and suspension tuning principles.
- Understanding of material selection for suspension components including high‑strength steels, alloy steels, lightweight materials, and composites.
- Experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
Good to have Technical skills
- CATIA V5/V6 Part Design, Assembly Design, GSD, and Drafting.
- Teamcenter, ENOVIA, or equivalent PLM tools.
- GD&T and Tolerance Stack-up Analysis.
- Vehicle Dynamics and Ride & Handling Development.
- Awareness of ADAMS Car, CarMaker, SIMPACK, or equivalent multibody simulation tools.
- DFMEA, DVP methodologies.
- Knowledge of Semi-Active and Adaptive Suspension Systems.
- Experience with Air Suspension System Development.
- Root Cause Analysis, 8D, Six Sigma, and Quality Tools.
- Knowledge of global automotive regulations and chassis engineering standards.
- EV and Hybrid Vehicle suspension development experience.
- Lightweight suspension design and cost optimization techniques.
- Experience working with global vehicle development programs.
- Supplier management and technical leadership experience.
- Understanding of Suspension NVH and Ride Comfort Optimization.
