Job summary

Qualifications

  • Educational qualification: Bachelor’s degree in science or Engineering (Fire Safety or Chemical Engineering) or related field and mandatory Advanced/Post Diploma in Industrial Safety.
  • Work Experience: 25+ years of experience in fire safety management and operations within the power or heavy industry sector.
  • Preferred Industry: Power Generation or Energy sector.

  • Head Fire & Safety Strategic Leadership and Safety Operations Management: ensure fire safety audits for compliance and improvement opportunities.
  • Identify potential hazards and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Assign and monitor fire prevention duties; supervise firefighting operations and ensure PPE availability and standards.
  • Investigate and perform root cause analyses for safety incidents; present corrective actions to senior management.
  • Review job safety requirements, including JSAs and HIRA.

Job description

Purpose/Objective
  • This role is responsible for ensuring occupational health and fire safety protocols, compliance with regulatory standards, and perform analysis in case of safety incidents.
  • This role leads the development and execution of emergency preparedness plans, promotes a strong safety culture, and oversees the digitization of safety processes.
  • Additionally, this role drives continual improvement in safety performance and fosters team engagement and professional development.
Key Responsibilities of Role
  • Head Fire & Safety Strategic Leadership and Safety Operations Management: Ensure fire safety audits to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Identify potential hazards and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Assign and monitor fire prevention/firefighting duties, supervise firefighting operations and ensure the availability and standards of safety equipment.
  • Perform investigations and root cause analysis (RCA) for safety incidents, review associated reports, and present corrective action plans to senior management.
  • Review job-specific safety requirements, including Job Safety Analysis (JSAs) and HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment).
  • Conduct safety committee meetings at both site and corporate levels including Apex Safety Committee and HSE committee, review safety audit non-compliance reports (NCRs) and ensure timely resolution.
  • Upload daily safety observations in GENSUITE systems.
  • Ensure purchase of equipment ensuring high quality and availability of personal protective equipment and other Safety equipment’s required during maintenance & operation of large-scale thermal plant.
  • Organize campaigns, competitions, contests, and other activities, which will develop and maintain the interest of workers in establishing and maintaining safe conditions of work and procedure.
  • Check and evaluate the effectiveness of action taken or proposed to be taken to prevent personal injuries.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response: Develop and maintain emergency response plans, conducting regular drills to ensure readiness.
  • Plan and resource allocation for COH/AOH/shutdowns, safety inspections, and permit releases.
  • Lead site-level fire and safety initiatives such as Safety Week and Fire Week.
  • Monitor and review mock drills and review emergency management plans, SOPs, and manuals.
  • Facilitate industrial hygiene surveys, both internally and with external parties, to ensure workplace safety.
  • Investigate dangerous occurrences and industrial diseases contracted by any workers employed within the factory.
  • Budget Management: Review and propose departmental budgeting requirements for approval.
  • Monitor and manage expenditures related to fire safety equipment and resources.
  • Present budget and financial reports to senior management, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Review technical requirements and ensure availability of fire safety equipment and resources.
  • Business Sustainability: Ensure adherence to IMS, AWMS, DISHA, and CHETNA guidelines within the department.
  • Implement and sustain Group Safety Standards and Safety Management systems(Critical vulnerability factor & Vulnerability Safety risk) Develop and maintain personal and departmental safety plans, including SOPs, emergency management plans, and safety manuals.
  • Ensure compliance with Legatrix and other regulatory requirements, submitting timely reports.
  • Prepare and present sustainability and annual OHS reports to management.
  • Lead site-level fire and safety initiatives, townhalls and participate in safety awards and accreditations.
  • Implement and sustain group safety standards and safety management systems, including Critical Vulnerability Factor (CVF) and Vulnerability Safety Risk (VSR).
  • Ensure preparation and submission of Safety MIS on monthly basis.
  • Attend Daily Planning Meeting (DPM), present status of fire and safety related activities and safety observations if any.
  • Attend Pre-Bid meetings/ kick off meeting for hiring new contractors and review their safety performance.
  • People and Team Engagement: Ensure trainings and drills, developing 'Train the Trainer' programs on different safety modules.
  • Participate in the recruitment process to attract and retain skilled personnel for the fire and safety team.
  • Drive and enhance employee engagement across the team to sustain a positive workplace culture.
  • Lead, inspire, and mentor the team to foster a high-performance culture and ensure cross-skilling through job rotation, technical, and behavioural trainings.
  • Ensure proper succession planning within the team.
  • Foster a conducive environment for high employee retention by ensuring team satisfaction and professional development.
  • Develop and implement training programs for site-level employees, coordinating with the training department.
