Job description

Hardware Electronic Design Engineer (M.Tech)

Location: Viman Nagar, Pune

Department: Electronics / Hardware Design

Employment Type: Full-Time.

Position Overview

We are seeking an M.Tech Hardware Electronic Design Engineer with strong first-principles circuit design ability, capable of taking a product from concept to validated hardware. This is a design origination role, not a schematic-copying or layout-only role. The candidate is expected to generate original electronic hardware architectures, substantiate them with independent design calculations and analysis, and carry them through schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping, and qualification.

The role spans two areas. The first is power electronic and embedded hardware, including power conversion stages, drive and control electronics, and digital and analog embedded boards for rectifiers, inverters, UPS, SMPS, and power converters. The second is sensor, control, and communication hardware for portable, handheld, and ruggedized products, requiring low-power design, robust interfacing, and electromagnetic and environmental hardening. Both industrial and ruggedized or defence-grade applications are covered. The candidate will work closely with mechanical, PCB fabrication, firmware, manufacturing, quality, and project teams.

Role & responsibilities
  • Develop original hardware architectures and topologies for new products from customer specifications, functional requirements, and system-level constraints.
  • Design analog, digital, mixed-signal, and power electronic circuits, including power supplies, DC-DC converters, drivers, protection circuits, sensor front ends, and microcontroller or FPGA/DSP-based embedded boards.
  • Perform independent design calculations covering power budget, efficiency and losses, component derating, thermal dissipation, worst-case timing and tolerance analysis, signal and power integrity, EMI/EMC margins, and reliability (MTBF)
  • Select and size power semiconductors, magnetics, filters, and heat-dissipating components, and coordinate with mechanical design on heat sinking, thermal interface, and cooling.
  • Design hardware for shock, vibration, and transportation environments, including component mounting, conformal coating, and connector and cable selection for ruggedized equipment.
  • Design sensor, control, and communication hardware for sealed portable and handheld products, meeting low-power and battery-operated constraints.
  • repare schematics, PCB stack-up and layout guidelines, Bills of Materials, and interconnect and cable diagrams, and review PCB layouts for correctness, manufacturability, and EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Ensure hardware design meets EMI/EMC, creepage and clearance, earthing and bonding, isolation, safety, and ingress-protection interface requirements in coordination with mechanical design.
  • Interface with vendors and suppliers on component sourcing, PCB fabrication feasibility, and first-article inspection.
  • Prepare design documentation, calculation sheets, design review records, test reports, and product release documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and contribute to design standardisation and product innovation.
  • Work with mechanical, firmware, and software teams for product integration.
Preferred candidate profile
  • Masters in Electronics, Electronics & Communication, Power Electronics, Embedded Systems, or a related discipline (mandatory).
  • 2 to 8 years of relevant experience in hardware/electronic product design, preferably for power electronic, embedded, electrical, or ruggedized equipment. Fresh M.Tech graduates with a strong design thesis/project background may also be considered.
  • Demonstrated record of designing new hardware, not only modifying or debugging existing designs. Candidates should be prepared to discuss circuits they personally originated.
  • Ability to carry out power, thermal, signal-integrity, and reliability calculations independently, and to defend the assumptions behind them in a design review.
  • Strong command of schematic capture and PCB design tools (Altium Designer, OrCAD, Cadence Allegro, or KiCad), including multi-layer, high-speed, and mixed-signal layout.
  • Hands-on circuit simulation capability (LTspice, PSpice, or equivalent) and familiarity with thermal simulation for electronic assemblies.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering hardware qualified for EMI/EMC compliance, including filter design, shielding, grounding schemes, and resolution of emission or susceptibility failures found in testing.
  • Working knowledge of power electronics fundamentals: switch-mode topologies, magnetics design, gate drive, and protection circuit design.
  • Sound understanding of analog and digital electronics, embedded microcontroller/FPGA interfacing, communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, Ethernet), and basic firmware bring-up support.
  • Proficiency with lab instrumentation: oscilloscopes, DMMs, power analysers, logic analysers, and spectrum/network analysers, for board bring-up and debug.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards for electronic hardware and ruggedized equipment, such as IEC/EN 61000 series EMI/EMC, MIL-STD-461 electromagnetic compatibility, MIL-STD-810 environmental, and IPC-2221/IPC-A-610 PCB design and assembly standards, will be an added advantage.
  • Strong analytical ability, ownership, communication skills, and willingness to work hands-on with prototypes and on the shop floor.
Added Advantage

The following are not essential requirements, but will be considered favourably:

  • Exposure to the design of fuze electronics, safety and arming electronics, or other precision electro-mechanical armament sub-system hardware.
  • Familiarity with fuze safety design criteria and qualification standards such as MIL-STD-1316, STANAG 4187, and MIL-STD-331, and with fuze safety review, certification, and clearance processes.
  • Experience in precision, low-power sensor and trigger circuit design, including inertial sensing, timing circuits, and initiation/firing circuit hardware.
  • Experience designing hardware that must survive severe launch, setback, spin, and impact environments, supported by explicit shock and vibration qualification.
  • Experience designing for long-term storage without maintenance, including component derating for shelf life, battery/primary-cell interface design, and corrosion- and moisture-resistant hardening.
  • Exposure to air gun, centrifuge, jolt, jumble, and drop testing of armament or precision electronic sub-systems.

Experience preparing hazard analyses, FMEA, fault trees, and safety documentation for review by certification or safety authorities.
