Job summary

Larsen & Toubro is seeking a Generator Installation, Commissioning & Overhauling Engineer to manage the complete lifecycle of large turbine generators in power plants. You will supervise installation, alignment, and hydrogen systems, perform commissioning tests, and oversee major overhauls, with focus on safety, OEM guidelines, and quality.

Qualifications

Job description

Designation: Generator Installation, Commissioning & Overhauling Engineer

Responsible for the installation, alignment, testing, hydrogen gas handling, commissioning, maintenance, and overhauling of large turbine generators in thermal, combined cycle, and industrial power plants. Ensure safe and reliable operation of generator systems in accordance with OEM specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities
1. Generator Installation & Erection
  • Supervise generator stator, rotor, bearing, seal oil system, and auxiliary equipment installation.
  • Verify foundation readiness, generator alignment, and coupling alignment with turbine.
  • Monitor installation of excitation systems, cooling systems, and hydrogen systems.
  • Ensure compliance with OEM erection procedures and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and customer representatives during installation activities.
2. Hydrogen Filling and Purging Operations
  • Prepare procedures for hydrogen charging and purging of generators.
  • Conduct CO? purging before hydrogen filling and vice versa during shutdown.
  • Monitor hydrogen purity, dew point, pressure, and leakage rates.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures for handling hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
  • Maintain records of gas consumption, purity, and operational parameters.
3. Generator Commissioning
  • Perform pre-commissioning checks and system readiness verification.
  • Conduct insulation resistance (IR), polarization index (PI), winding resistance, and other electrical tests.
  • Verify operation of protection systems, seal oil systems, excitation systems, and cooling systems.
  • Support no-load, synchronization, and full-load testing activities.
  • Prepare commissioning reports and handover documentation.
4. Generator Overhauling & Maintenance
  • Plan and execute generator major and minor overhauls.
  • Supervise rotor withdrawal and insertion activities.
  • Inspect stator winding, rotor winding, retaining rings, bearings, seals, and cooling systems.
  • Conduct dimensional checks, air-gap measurements, rotor sag measurements, and bearing clearances.
  • Identify defects and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare overhaul reports and maintenance recommendations.
5. Testing & Troubleshooting
  • Analyze generator performance and operating parameters.
  • Investigate issues related to vibration, temperature rise, hydrogen leakage, insulation deterioration, and bearing problems.
  • Coordinate with OEM specialists for root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Review operational data and preventive maintenance requirements.
6. Safety & Quality Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to site safety procedures and permit systems.
  • Conduct risk assessments and toolbox talks before critical activities.
  • Implement quality control checks during erection, commissioning, and overhaul activities.
  • Maintain compliance with OEM guidelines and industry standards.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree/ in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in turbine-generator erection, commissioning, and maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of hydrogen-cooled generators, seal oil systems, excitation systems, and generator protection systems.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with large utility generators (100 MW to 800 MW and above).
  • Exposure to OEMs such as MHI,
  • Experience in power plant commissioning and outage management.
