Job description

  • Location: India (Tirupur)

  • Department: Product Development / Sampling / Technical Design

  • Employment Type: Full-time

  • Reports To: Sampling Manager / Product Development Head / Lead Technical Designer

Position Overview

The Garment Sample Developer bridges the gap between creative fashion design and physical garment production. Operating within India's dynamic apparel manufacturing sector, this role is responsible for transforming design concepts, sketches, and tech packs into high-quality, production-ready prototype samples. The ideal candidate possesses deep technical expertise in pattern making, garment construction, fabric behavior, and manufacturing methodologies to ensure design intent is maintained while optimizing for scalable factory production.

Core Responsibilities

  • Sample Development & Execution: Interpret design tech packs, 2D sketches, and specifications to develop physical prototype samples. Manage the sampling process from initial fit (Proto 1) through salesman samples (SMS) to final pre-production samples (PPS).

  • Pattern Engineering & Fitting: Collaborate closely with pattern makers to review, refine, and modify manual or CAD patterns (e.g., Gerber, Lectra, Tukatech). Lead fitting sessions on live models or dress forms, identifying balance issues, drag lines, and drape inconsistencies, and implementing accurate corrections.

  • Material & Fabric Analysis: Evaluate fabric characteristics (shrinkage, stretch factor, weight, and drape) to predict how materials behave during sewing. Ensure appropriate interfacing, linings, and trims are selected to achieve the desired silhouette and structure.

  • Production Optimization: Analyze sample construction methods to identify potential assembly bottlenecks, structural vulnerabilities, or cost inefficiencies. Proactively suggest alternative seams, stitching techniques, or construction details to streamline bulk manufacturing without compromising aesthetic value.

  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Serve as the primary technical liaison between the design team, merchandisers, and factory floor supervisors. Ensure all sample revisions, fit comments, and grading updates are clearly documented and communicated across departments.

  • Quality & Compliance Control: Maintain strict adherence to buyer measurement tolerances, quality standards, and safety compliance rules (especially regarding childrenswear, if applicable). Inspect finished samples for defects, structural symmetry, and overall execution prior to buyer submission.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: Degree or Diploma in Fashion Technology, Apparel Production, Garment Manufacturing, or a related technical discipline from a reputable institute (e.g., NIFT, NID, or international equivalent).

  • Experience: 3 to 7 years of proven experience in garment sample development, technical design, or sampling department management, preferably working with leading export houses, domestic retail brands, or buying agencies.

  • Technical Expertise: Proficient understanding of garment construction, stitching types (ISO standards), pattern making, grading, and marker making. Familiarity with specialized machinery (flatlock, overlock, feed-off-the-arm, computerized embroidery) is highly valued.

  • Software Skills: Hands-on experience with apparel CAD software (Tukatech, Gerber, Lectra, Optitex) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems is a significant advantage.

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interpret and translate international client feedback and technical comments into clear instructions for domestic factory workers.
